23 Of The Most Offensive Things About 2017 For Pakistanis

By Sajeer Shaikh | 30 Dec, 2017

See, we all thought 2017 would pass by smoothly, but we were all wrong. Our inner keyboard warriors squirmed and wriggled as 2017 went by. And each time we found something new to be offended with. Some things were legit. Others… well, let’s just say, point of view ki baat hoti hai.

So, let’s go over some of the people and things that offended Pakistanis this past year:

1. Mahira Khan

Mahira broke the internet unwillingly and unintentionally when pictures of her chilling with Ranbir Kapoor started circulating. People attacked her, slut-shamed her and questioned her character. But Mahira, being the absolute boss that she is, shut shit down like a pro. Props to you, you absolute queen.

2. The smog

Well, it didn’t so much offend Pakistanis as it did poison their lungs. But that’s offensive too, right? And terrifying. It’s also our fault, since we don’t bother looking after our environment. So there’s that.

3. Malala Yousafzai

Malala had quite a year. While she excelled in her personal and academic life, people kept finding ways to be offended by the fact that she’s still around. Moreover, Pakistanis were even offended by her attire. Matlab, hadh hai.

4. Sadaf Kanwal

Sadaf, too, was in the news a lot. Her sizzling dance number was one of the reasons why. There was also this photo shoot that offended Pakistanis. Because humari ghairat brigade isi ke liye tayyar rehti hai.

5. Aamna Ilyas and Hasnain Lehri, together

These two were a part of a photo shoot that caused shadeed pait dard in all Pakistanis. Waisay honestly, they look really great.

6. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s refusal to be forced to conform to society’s views about harassment

Oh boy. Sharmeen had enough problems to deal with in her personal life when all of Pakistan jumped in to point out just how offended they were at her being offended by a friend request. This took a while to die down.

7. These students from LUMS

This was honestly extremely offensive. Harassment is not a joke. Such tasteless comments contribute to rape culture. Let’s hope we all learnt a lesson after this went down.

8. Imaan Mazari and her remarks against the everything

Being the daughter of a politician has its downside – something Imaan Mazari has now become all too familiar with. However, she takes each blow in her stride and marches on. You go, girl!

9. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa education department’s new flag

Yeah… this actually happened. People thought KPK’s education department was rallying for LGBTQ rights. Because of a flag. Yep.

10. Aamir Liaquat’s existence

Whether you love him or hate him, Aamir bhai gives no fucks. He’s everywhere.

11. Amir Khan and Faryal Makhdoom

These two kept the entire country on its toes with their constant drama. And while that drama was infuriating, we just couldn’t help but keep up with our desi Kardashians.

12. Chain Aye Na

It wasn’t just the movie, its plot, its soundtrack and the awful dialogues that made this movie offensive. You’d think that would be enough. But no. This movie was extremely regressive, glorified rape culture and casually showed violence against women.

13. Imran Khan offended liberals by speaking against them.  He offended Nawaz supporters by existing.

He probably offended a whole lot of other people. He’s not the most careful individual when it comes to thinking statements through.

14. Nawaz Sharif and his “mujhe kyun nikala” saga

I mean, he single-handedly offended an entire nation and was ousted as our PM. And then HE got offended because he couldn’t understand why he’d been removed.

15. The notorious Bata ad

There’s bad advertising. And then there’s outrageous advertising. This was the latter.

16. Urwa and Farhan

These lovebirds celebrated their anniversary with an adorable photo shoot. And that offended Pakistanis. Because how dare they celebrate love?! How dare they let the world know that they’re married and can touch each other publicly?! Koi sharam hoti hai, koi haya hoti hai. Ugh.

17. Muniba Mazari

Muniba was unfortunately dragged through the mud this year. Let’s hope she has a better 2018.

PERIODS?! Haw haye.

Pretty much how any discussion around menstruation went down.

19. Feminism

It’s 2017 and Pakistanis still believe feminists want to destroy men and are the root of all evil. Kya karein?

20. QB

QB got a lot of hate for abusing Imran Khan and defending it. But she doesn’t really seem to care, so it’s all good in the hood for her.

21. PEMRA

People were pretty offended by PEMRA this year. There were quite a few slip-ups. And some protective measures that didn’t go down pretty well.

22. Momina Mustehsan

Okay, I guess we have a lot to do with this. We flooded your newsfeed with Momina. And you guys were extremely offended by it. But yaar, kyun? Talent toh hai na bandi main? And deep down, you guys probably love her too.

23. MangoBaaz

Periodbaaz. Mominabaaz. Pata nahi aur kaun kaunse baaz. But it’s okay. Because above everything else, we’re keeraybaaz. Huehue. We’ll keep bombarding you with stuff you actually like reading, and certain uncomfortable or taboo things that you may not like. Because, at the end of the day, we gotta talk about all this. Bear with us, okay? Okay.

Did we forget anything? Let us know in the comments.
