Here's A Guide On How To Actually Be Nice To Your Own Self

By Sajeer Shaikh | 23 Sep, 2017

There are times when you’re your own worst critic. You tend to be overly harsh with yourself, or you hate the skin you’re in. When you aren’t happy with the way you are, you want to make changes. And if you still remain unhappy, you may find yourself falling down the pit of depression. Self-love is always important. It’s not easy, but here’s a guide on how you can learn to go a little easier on yourself:

Identify the changes you want to make

Point out for yourself where you think legit, attainable improvements can be made.

Try to understand why you want to make those changes

Are you making those changes because you feel pressurized to please others? Or are you making those changes to achieve a sense of self-fulfillment? Make sure your goals are crystal clear in your head. Self-love will make you want to improve readily. Pressure from others will make the entire process irksome. So make those changes if you want – only if YOU want to make them. And ONLY if they come from a place of well-founded, constructive criticism.

Cut out any form of negativity

There’s way too much negativity in people’s lives to pile on even more. Get rid of the pessimistic, insignificant parts of your life that you don’t need. You won’t miss them.

Negativity can also include the voice in your head, btw

Sometimes, you need to weed out the negativity in your own mind. You need to realize that everyone else is doing an excellent job at putting you down. You really don’t need to add to that. In fact, you need to build yourself up.

Every time you’re about to criticize yourself, try to give yourself a compliment

Have negative thoughts? Like, maybe you think your thighs are too chubby. Or that you’re doing a crappy job at work. Every time you think like that, give yourself a compliment instead. Like, maybe your hair looks great. Or you may not be doing well at your job, but at least you have your personal shit intact. Something along those lines, you know?

Instead of thinking about what you’re doing wrong, think about what you’re doing right

Hey listen – there’s no way you’re only doing things wrong. Even if it seems like it, that’s probably not the case. So go easy on yourself and focus on everything you’re doing right. Also, stop panicking about what you’re doing wrong. The more you panic, the worse the situation gets. Calm down, you got this.

If you have to make legit changes, get help and try to follow through with them

Don’t shut people out when they want to help you achieve your goals. Let positive people in.

Mark your progress

Do not allow yourself to be bogged down with a plateau in your progress

There will be times when it feels like stuff isn’t going anywhere. And that’s okay. Progress doesn’t happen overnight. Allow yourself that time.

If you feel you’re depressed or suffering from any mental illness – get help

Should you feel yourself falling down the pit of mental illnesses, do not be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to a friend or get actual medical help. Self-love is also about being able to take care of yourself when every part of you tells you not to.

Do not fret over society’s definition of success

Make your own definition of success. Set your own goals and follow through with them.

And don’t tie your self-worth into someone else’s definition of success either

Let others do what they want. Do your own thing.

Lastly, learn to talk to yourself like you would talk to your best friend

If you wouldn’t say any of the things you do to yourself to your best friend, it’s time to stop saying them altogether. You have to be your own best friend and you need to have your own back at all times.

Being you is probably not easy. You have your own burdens, responsibilities, and tasks that you’re swamped under. But it’s essential to remember to go easy on yourself. Because, honestly, no one else will. So you might as well make things easier for yourself through a little self-love. If this helps, or even if it doesn’t, let us know in the comments below.
