We Know How You're Celebrating This Defence Day

By Sarmad Amer | 6 Sep, 2015

Defence Day of Pakistan is a day in celebration of the country’s struggle and bravery in the war against India in 1965. The day is a special memorial to the military forces of the country who were at the very center of the battlefield. While celebrating a war is never a good idea because wars never result in producing something good, we in Pakistan celebrate this day not as a celebration of war but as a celebration of the resilience of the forces and the people that we all need to be inspired by.

Today, however, much of the reverence of this auspicious day is limited to television talk shows debating the India-Pakistan relationship dynamics that exist today and the parade and air show that our boys specially rehearse for so we can cheer on as they display their stunts.

So, here are the things that will feature in your Defence Day this year:

The Air Show and Parade.

Who doesn’t love seeing some serious uniform swag and mind blowing fighter jet stunts. This is the highlight of the day, anyway!

Not so much green

Maybe it’s the exhaustion from August 14’s green overdose or maybe it’s just the somber nature of the event but not every crevice is bedecked in gaudy shades of green. Whatever little you do see is much more tasteful.

In school, on TV, at political rallies, from Dada Abu. Everything is about stories of the bravery of javaans of yore.

Special “Educational” Events

Speaking of schools, since the academic year is already in full swing by the time Defence Day rolls in so schools hold special events. It is celebrated mostly with short plays being done on the military’s bravery or song competitions.

In general, since this is the day that is celebrated as a memorial to the bravery of our military forces during the 1965 war, so everywhere, everyone is especially respectful of them.

Critics

Everyone who loves to hate on the forces (true, there is definitely room for improvement but look at all the hard work they do!) just loves to speak out to incite the patriotic ones. Especially this day, because they know they’ll make it into the news.

Everyone makes sure the papers quote them. And now with social media becoming as important as the regular news, literally every single person is a tweet away from celebrity status.

These politicians would do anything to stay in the news, amirite!

You. In your PJs. Asleep most of the day.

It’s a Sunday, after all. Maybe if they had decided to move it to Monday you would’ve celebrated the extra holiday.

Whether you go out on streets, have a respectful debate with someone, send out a bunch of Whatsapp messages to your friends or just chill out with some torrents, remember to take some time out and be thankful for your freedom.
