This 17-Year-Old Lahori Developed A Video Game Against All Odds And He's Not Stopping Anytime Soon

By Syed Saad Ahmed | 3 Mar, 2019

Junaid Arshad, a resident of Lahore, has been creating video-games for mobile phones, from scratch, at the age of 17. He was doing his O Levels when his father faced a financial crisis, having lost much of his savings in investments he had made earlier. This motivated Junaid to get into something that had always fascinated him: coding.

He wanted to support his father while not compromising on his goals and dreams and the only way he could think of doing that was to create video-games.

Junaid released his first game on the Play Store on the 28th of January, 2019.

When he first started working on developing video-games, Junaid faced a lot of backlash from his parents. They would tell him to focus on studying for his O Level exams and restricted his computer usage to half an hour per day. But Junaid was persistent in his goals.

While his parents thought that they were making him study, he would be busy jotting down business ideas in a ledger he maintained. The summer after his O Levels, the restrictions were lifted and Junaid spent as much as 10 hours a day learning programming languages and development software.

Eventually, his parents started showing their support for his dreams.

In his talks with MangoBaaz, Junaid recounted how he had been working day and night, learning new software and programming languages when his father sat him down to talk to him. After listening to what Junaid had to say and how driven he was about his goals, his father understood Junaid’s passion for video-games, and started supporting his son wholeheartedly.

The idea for the first game was in fact given to him by his father.

The infamous World Record Egg had just broken Kylie Jenner’s record for the most liked picture on Instagram. Junaid’s father advised him to create a game featuring the egg.

Junaid was so content with the fact that his father was giving him ideas for games that he immediately started working on a game and was able to complete it in less than a week! After much hard work and countless hours of coding, the game was released on the Play Store and made available to the public on the 28th of January, 2019.

Junaid has two more games coming out soon.

With the release of his first game, Junaid is not done yet! He has two more games scheduled to come out soon. There’s also another interactive story telling game that he has worked on in the past which he may get back to working on and completing.

According to Junaid, the Pakistani gaming industry is an untapped gold mine which no local body has benefited from.

In his words, he wants “to create a platform from where the gold talent of game development can be show cased.” And to top it all off, he wants that platform to be none other than his very own Lemon Squeezy Games.

Well, Junaid – you’ve got yourself at least one heartfelt supporter for your platform and I wish you all the best for your upcoming games. What do y’all think about this? Let me know!
