Did you know that there is a cold desert in Skardu?
And no, I don’t mean cold dessert like a caked Alaska, but like a cold version of the Sahara desert. And it is BEAUTIFUL.
Located at 7,303 feet above sea level, the Katpana desert is a cold desert
It’s beautiful enough to melt any heart. It stretches from Khaplu Valley to Zanskar. It is easily accessible from the Skardu airport and a lot of people visit the portion which is located near the airport.
The stunning sand dunes of this desert are covered by snow during the winter months
The temperature in the desert can go as low as -25°C between the months of December and January.
And guess what? You can do glamorous camping here! There is a campsite called Glamp which has waterproof tents, attached bathroom and running hot water. Imagine sleeping under the stars in this BEAUTIFUL dessert.

You would think a place as desolate and sparse as a desert wouldn’t inspire awe but somehow Katpana does. Being located in Skardu, not only is the temperature here pleasant but the snow-covered mountains provide for a beautiful backdrop as well.
We truly don’t’ appreciate our own country’s beauty enough, tbh.
