Here's What You Should Do if You Ever Encounter an Internet Troll

By Sajeer Shaikh | 14 Mar, 2016

The Internet is filled with assholes who like to be assholes for the heck of it, also known as ‘internet trolls’. The reasons behind their actions are best known to them, maybe time paas ho jaata hai or they’re probably trying to fill some pathetic void in their lives, who knows. But the frustration that they harbor often surfaces as online hate.

Here are a bunch of things you could do if you encounter something along those lines:

1. Report them

Though usually ineffective, reporting people is always an option, especially if they’re spamming you or being obscene.

2. Block them

Usually more effective than reporting, this will get them off your profiles for good. They won’t be able to be a nuisance. Well, for you, at least.

3. Get rid of the comments

You can always count on the delete button to make your life a whole lot easier and troll-free. Chances are, they’ll keep adding comments, but they’re bound to get tired eventually.

4. Don’t give a fuck

They’re bored enough to type out all those words and sentences that don’t mean shit, just to get a few seconds of attention. As sad as that is, is giving in to what they want really worth it?

5. Be the bigger person

You could just ignore the useless comments that come your way and not create a scene, but will that stop the troll from trolling? Probably not. Worth trying, though. They’re the ones who look bad, at the end of the day.

6. Laugh it off

If you grow a thicker skin and learn to laugh with them, the joke’s on them. They’ll end up looking pretty stupid, since the entire point of their comments becomes useless.

7. Pretend like you don’t understand

What happens to a joke when you don’t understand it and keep asking for explanations? It falls flat on its face. And it’s super embarrassing for the person who initiated it. Insult their perverse humor by pretending not to understand it. It’ll get infuriating for them.

8. Troll them back

Eent ka jawab pathar se, or something along those lines.

9. Reason with them

This will probably be the least effective, since they’re not looking to be reasoned with. Usually online hate comes from trolls who’re just extremely bored. Worth a shot, though. With the right amount of empathy, you might just get through to someone.

10. Outnumber them

Call in your squad for some online roasting. At least you’ll get a good laugh out of it.

11. Shred them to pieces

Some people just need to be shown their true auqaat. Go ahead and tear them a new one.

At the end of the day, you need to keep in mind that you can’t please everyone on the Internet (or generally, too.) There will always be that one person who will hide behind a screen and make someone else’s day worse to feel better about his or her life. That’s just how the internet is. As long as you don’t let it get to you or affect you personally, you’ll be fine.
