Finding Japanese food and high-quality sushi can be a difficult feat in landlocked Lahore. The sushi options available in Lahore are very basic possibly because sourcing a variety of fresh sashimi-grade seafood on a daily basis is cost-ineffective. Although currently, sushi eaters are a niche market, their number seems to be on the rise. With the emergence of many Japanese joints in the city, exposure to sushi has increased, making one wonder if Lahore has finally embraced sushi or whether this too is a fad that would pass.
Whether you’re a sushi-loyalist wondering where you can get your next sushi fix or are someone who wants to know what the fuss is about, here is the ultimate guide to sushi restaurants in Lahore:
Fujiyama at Avari
Fujiyama has nursed my many intense sushi cravings. When the temperature in Lahore rises and I’m scared that indulging my sushi obsession may lead to hospitalization, Fuji is the only place I trust. I ask the chef what’s fresh and what I’d like my rolls to contain, and he always comes up with an off-the-menu item that appeases my palate. The presentation of the items may not be as stellar as some of the newer establishments, but the taste is always on point.
Sakura at Pearl Continental
For anyone looking for quality All-You-Can-Eat sushi, book a poolside table at Sakura Pearl Continental on Fridays and Saturdays for Rs. 4000 plus tax. Whether you order À la carte or opt for their weekend special, Sakura has a great collection of fresh maki and nigiri to choose from.
Gaia Japanese Fusion
The innovative menu at Gai’a is a breath of fresh air. From elegant Salmon Ceviche to piquant Tatakis, Gaia offers the best range of items for sushi lovers. The prices here are steep though. If you want a steal deal, make room in your schedule for an All-You-Can-Eat-Monday-Maki-Mania deal available for both lunch and dinner offered for Rs. 2,500 plus tax.
Wasabi
Wasabi is a hit for people who prefer cooked sushi. The prices here are also more economical compared to other eateries. They do special All-You-Can-Eat price fix menus from time to time. That’s the only time they reel me in as a customer. I have friends who swear by Wasabi, but for me, the options here are too basic. Apart from their spicy salmon rolled in nori, I’m not a fan of much. But hey- you may totally disagree; so check them out and let me know how you feel by leaving a review on Hungerist. You can also order sushi from Wasabi while being seated at The Ramen House.
Sumo
The management at Sumo gets additional brownie points for remarkable customer service. Every time I’ve visited the place, I’m greeted with delicious complimentary drinks and dessert. The prices are relatively reasonable and the ambiance is perfect for a romantic dinner. Whether you’re in the mood for Nigiri- a type of sushi made from thinly sliced pieces of raw fish placed over pressed vinegared rice, or want Maki- sushi rolls wrapped in nori (seaweed) and seasoned rice, Sumo has plenty of option to pick from. My personal favorite is their signature spicy salmon roll. It hits a sweet spot every single time.
Asian Aroma Restaurant at Park Lane
Relatively unknown, the Asian Aroma Restaurant located on the Mezzanine floor at Park Lane, serves both fresh Teppanyaki and an assortment of sushi options. Apart from serving authentic Japanese cuisine they also serve an array of Thai dishes. If you’ve been to Asian Aroma, tell us about your experience on Hungerist.
Bamboo Union
Bamboo Union is a great fusion place to go to when your friends refuse to accompany you on sushi dates. Though the options are limited, the sushi is good. You can order Crunchy Maki as an entree for yourself, or share it as an appetizer with your gang followed up by a Pan-Asian main.
Gari Japanese Cusine
If like me, you’re sick of paying an arm and a leg for your sushi cravings, I present you an economical answer to your woes: Gari Japanese Cusine, operational only for delivery and catering. They also do sushi burritos! Check out their Facebook page for weekday specials.
