This New Amazon Prime Show Will Remind You Of ‘Band Baaja Baraat' Just A Whole Lot More Dramatic

By Arslan Athar | 28 Mar, 2019

Shaadiyan, we’ve been to them and we’ve planned them. We all know that they can be quite the logistical nightmare as well as help stir some SERIOUS family D R A M A. It is said that weddings beautifully capture our culture, well, while they do that, they also depict the many layers of our lives.

This intricacy is exactly what a new show on Amazon Prime deals with. An Indian mini-series called ‘Made In Heaven’ is making waves online and on social media.

The show follows Tara and Karan, who both own and run a wedding planning agency called ‘Made in Heaven’.

They’re an up and coming event planning duo, who are definitely making their way into the high class ‘Big Fat Indian Weddings’, oh you know, some Ambani level shit. Now, of course, you must be thinking, high fi shaadi, what can go wrong? Let me tell me- EVERYTHING.

The show goes into the lives of both Karan and Tara, as well as rip open the many (bitchy) layers of ‘high society’. For example, the first episode is about the marriage of Anged (who’s from a wealthy family) and Aliya (who’s NOT from the same circles as Anged’s family). Anged’s parents ask ‘Made in Heaven’ to run background checks on the girl, because in their eyes, this total rando is walking into their family and is definitely doing it for the money. As the episode unravels, you see Tara and Karan use their skills and their personal experiences to craft the perfect wedding and eventually saving the day.

Tara’s story matches Aliya’s quite a bit.

In flashbacks, we see that Tara gets a job at a major steel company, and works for Adil Khanna. In the present, Tara is married to Adil. In fact, Adil is one of the investors for ‘Made in Heaven’ and this is something we see his mother and her friends talk about behind their backs. The unease between Tara and her in-laws is palpable and as the series goes on, the tension between Tara and Adil increases too.

Karan’s story also has some high stakes.

Karan is that guy we know, the one who’s taking some time to figure his life out. In most other societies, that’s alright but desis aren’t the nicest about it. Karan owned a bar before he started ‘Made in Heaven’, but that failed and he lost a lot of money. This is still something his friends tease him about. Additionally, his father helps him financially but he never lets Karan forget about it, creating a lot of pressure on Karan.

Above all this, Karan is gay, but he isn’t out to anyone. He’s having a hard time coming to term with his sexuality but he’s also very adventurous with it too.

Other than Tara and Karan, there are some very important side roles in the mini-series.

Faiza Naqvi (Kalki Koechlin) is Tara’s best friend and her closest confidant. In the first few episodes, she isn’t too relevant, however, she really blossoms into an important character as well. There’s also Adil Khanna (Jim Sarbh), Tara’s husband. Initially, he seems like the perfect supportive husband, however as the show goes on, that perception doesn’t hold on for much longer.

Tara and Karan employ Jasminder, who prefers to be known as Jazz. She’s a girl from a small town but she’s trying to make it in the big city. She’s an eager learner and adds some relief in the storyline. Lastly, there’s Shashank Arora. He’s Tara and Karan’s videographer. He’s all over the wedding, shooting things he shouldn’t. Shashank is usually seen compiling all his footage and giving voiceover towards the end, and it is this voiceover that is leaving audiences with all the feels.

Each wedding they tackle reveals a bit more about themselves and how they tackle the issues in their life. There’s a lot of unhappiness, stress, and madness that they both manage to hide with the facade of joy and festivities.

Desis are obsessed with this show.

The show is putting things in perspective.

Comparisons and parallels were being drawn.

And audiences cannot get enough of the main characters; Tara and Karan.

The digital space is creating a lot of room for interesting and refreshing storylines like this. Here’s hoping to see more content like ‘Made In Heaven’ coming out from Pakistan too.
