Mufti Muneeb feuding with Fawad Chaudhry, a sentence I never expected to write in my lifetime.

Fawad Chaudhry usually ends up making headlines because of his bold statements and audacious opinions. After occupying the office of his new ministry, Chaudhry has taken several initiatives which have been appreciated by many. STILL a few don’t seem to be happy with the actions taken by the minister and once again Mr. Fawad has become the center of the news.

So, basically, Fawad Chaudhry recently proposed that formation of a scientific body that would replace the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee 

He said that the scientific committee will prepare a calendar for 10 years that would not require the sighting of the moon. He asserted that the use of the latest technology is extremely important to ensure the end of uncertainty regarding the sighting of the moon. He mentioned that this is being done to end the controversy related to the start and end of the Islamic months.

Fawad Chaudhry said that he has great respect for Mufti Muneebur Rehman but doesn’t agree with the way the moon is sighted by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee. He even went on to explain the matter in religious terms and said that the way of sighting the moon by Islamic schools of thought of Imam Hanbal and Imam Shaafai is different. He further added to his statement by stating that “Imam Hanbal supports physical sighting of the moon while Imam Shaafai recommends scientific ways for it.” The minister made it clear that the government would NOT force people to follow the calendar issued by the scientific committee.

The Minister of Science and Technology was appreciated by many for proposing a seemingly progressive step

Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman, maybe seeing a threat to his one job, lashed out at the idea proposed by Fawad Chaudhry

He asserted that only the relevant Minister i.e. Minister for Religious Affairs, I assume, should have a right to discuss religious matters. He said that the ministers who are not aware of the sensitive matters should NOT have a right to comment/interfere in religious affairs.

Upon being asked about the objection by the Mufti, Fawad Chaudhry stated that maulanas CANNOT decide matters related to the administration of the state

He also said that the road to progress demands the Youth to fully participate and does not really require the contribution of the molvis. He further mentioned that development can be attained by the use of scientific technology.

Scientific advancement is a prerequisite for development and progress BUT the religious matters are sensitive thus the consultation and advice of Islamic scholars are necessary.
