This kind of behaviour from the media is not okay.

A female Doctor in Sialkot was harassed by the media in her own office.

In a video that has been making its rounds on social media, we see footage of journalists storming into this female doctor’s office and harassing her as well as her patients and staff.

The doctor working in a government clinic was being asked about her behaviour with other patients in the room. Journalists were seen speaking to patients by the door before surrounding the doctor at her desk.

In the video on social media, we can see that the doctor held her ground while recording the entire situation on her phone. Many of the journalists were verbally attacking the doctor, telling her to put her phone away while filming her without her consent. The doctor repeatedly asked the men to put their cameras away and sit down but was refused every time. At one point a couple of them began to film her filming them.

People on social media have taken notice of the incident and have been praising the doctor for being so calm.

Many are calling her brave for her headstrong stance, as well.

While it is obviously fantastic to see such a strong individual taking hold of the situation, it is definitely not something we should just expect our women to have to do. Individuals in the media, namely journalists, are meant to be the watchdogs of the country. As per their job, they are meant to inform the citizens, not torture and verbally abuse them and unfortunately in Pakistani media, there is too much of it.

Earlier this year, a Samaa TV anchor, Kiran Aftab was heavily criticized for her behaviour towards two doctors on her show.

Worst journalism. So condescending towards the guests. Those doctors were not paid for 4 months how much more do you want them to suffer. For a salary of 30k they collect chase labs, even do half the nursing and even carry patients on stretcher. #kiranaftab

The doctors came as guests to her show and were absolutely misbehaved with. Name calling, insinuating insults and lacking in overall manners and decency, the host was called out by the public on her ridiculous behaviour and demeanour towards her guests.

Not long after, another TV host was exposed for the way he treated his guest, social media star Nasir Khan Jan on his morning show.

Muhammed Shuaeb, the host sat with Kiran Aftab on their morning show and criticized Jan for his content, throwing insults at him and calling his content inappropriate. Jan was invited on to the show with any prior knowledge of knowing he was going to be ridiculed on television.

Though media is important in a country like Pakistan and while journalists are dedicated to discovering the truth in a story, there is no sense of media ethics and laws in this town. The way that doctor was being spoken to, the way she was being approached and the way she was being harassed was absolutely not okay. She was a private citizen working at her job in her own space. It was a complete violation in personal space, privacy and the right to say no to filming.

Though this may be a bit of a stretch in comparison, Princess Diana died literally because she was hounded by the media, journalists and paparazzi. There is a way to approach a subject however with proper consent and a common sense of boundaries. The importance of strong, legal and respectable journalism may not be the highest on the list of priorities in the eyes of the government but it should be. This reporting is not raw it’s wrong and if we don’t say something, it’s irresponsible of us as citizens of this country who owe ourselves much more.
