A few days ago, Pakistanis were ‘convinced’ that former-Pakistani singer Adnan Sami is living in India as a spy for our military. Following the artist’s statement after India’s crossing of the LoC last week, Pakistanis responded by thanking Adnan for his services as an ISI agent.

This afternoon, the Indian Navy tried to enter Pakistani waters, but our Navy intercepted them, sending them back to India. Before Pakistanis could even get to congratulating the Pakistani Navy, they thanked the services of ‘Major’ Adnan Sami, who provided an ‘encrypted’ message late last night about the Indian Navy’s plans.
The tweet supposedly by Adnan Sami looks incredibly fake if you look at the inconsistency of font and style, but people don’t seem to care.

A couple of days ago, the singer tried to clarify things but it seems people are too in love with the Major sahab.
He’s trying to be cheeky and to be honest, this response is better than what I had expected him to say. In an interview he gave recently, Adnan responded to these jokes. He said that he’s taking them lightheartedly and in the end also said ‘Is that all you got for me, bro?’

This entire exercise with the fake tweet just goes to show how far we’re willing to take a joke.
It seems as though the joke may have gone too far. Zeba Bakhtiar, Sami’s ex-wife, has had her Wikipedia page edited to include a bit about Sami’s activities as an ISI agent. Zeba has nothing to do with this online trolling- she’s a Pakistani through and through and doesn’t need to be dragged into this.

Clearly, this entire thing is getting out of hand. From fake tweets being circulated to Zeba Bakhtiar’s page being meddled with, there needs to be a limit here. There is no need to drag others in with this joke- everyone just needs to make sure that no one is getting their feelings hurt because that’s when things get ugly.
