This is What You Need to Absolutely Avoid While You're At University

By Sanaa Bajwa | 5 Jan, 2016

The four years you spend at university are likely to be the most memorable years of your life. It is also probably going to be the last time when the only things expected of you are to pass tests and keep up with coursework… so you best take full advantage of it. As such, this is what you should definitely NOT do. It’s for your own good.

1. Sticking to old friends.

Some of your friends from your old school may be coming to the same university as you, which is great in helping you get comfortable, but not so great if they’re also the only friends you happen to graduate with. You won’t ever again be surrounded by so many people with similar interests and the willingness to be social (trust us, people generally don’t like people). Step out of you comfort zone and talk to someone new! And no, sending a Facebook friend request to the girl in the second row from the back does not count.

2. Getting into a relationship.

It’s the first week, and you’ve found the love of your life, congratulations! You’ve already named your second child and decided what you’re going to do on your 25th wedding anniversary. Just remember to let a relationship be just that, and not turn it into an all-consuming black hole. Don’t let it keep you from being otherwise social and involved. You’re still a separate human being, we promise.

3. Getting hung up over someone.

In the alternative ending, the object of your desire doesn’t know you exist, or has no interest in getting involved with you or worse, has moved on to a senior. Don’t make your entire university experience about them by moping around and stalking them on campus because you will get over it eventually. Make the most of these four years, and remember, there are new freshmen coming in every year 😉

4. Not studying what you like.

You’re given free rein to pursue your interests, so go ahead! Meeting academic expectations is hard enough as it is without having to do it in something you can’t or just don’t want to do. Family pressure sucks, but so does four years of econometrics when all you really really want to do is balance a budget. Hey, whatever floats your boat.

5. Not studying at all.

It’s easy to get carried away and forget what you’re actually in university for. Your final grade is cumulative so it will exaggerate all your low grades, and you’ll have to work really hard to graduate with a decent mark. Avoid the hassle and just study. Just do it!

6. Not getting involved in extra-curriculars.

You either won’t join any societies or you’ll join 8, both of which aren’t a good idea. It’s best if you pick one and commit. Extra curriculars definitely matter on your CV, and they give you the chance of learning of how to actually get work done and becoming friends with people with similar interests, but maybe different subjects, who you wouldn’t otherwise have met.

7. Not looking ahead.

You should start thinking about what sort of work you want to end up doing. Look at companies that interest you and contact them for internships. It’ll give you a chance to see what the work is actually like, and the time to switch your career path if you want. It’s also a good reality to check and helps you get in touch with what the job market is actually like, so you’re not clueless when you graduate.

8.  Not getting to know your instructors.

Not only do they have a lot to teach you, but they’re also going to be the ones who write your reference letters if you want to study ahead. It’s a good idea to go to them outside of class to discuss any questions you might have, be vocal during class and volunteer for any work they need doing.

9. Pretending to have read the text.

Even if you get away with it all the time, it only takes once of being called out to give a summary to the rest of the class to get a semesters worth of embarrassment. Refer to point number 5 and just do it!

10. Don’t skip class.

Especially if your instructor has a penchant for surprise quizzes. It’s not worth the effort of running around during exam time to try and catch up on whatever you missed.

11. Don’t leave everything till the last minute.

Writing papers or studying for exams could have been done at the last minute before, but the format of university education is such that it requires consistent effort. If you try and leave it till the end, all your work will pile up and leave you hyperventilating in a corner of the library trying to desperately cram 500 pages in the last half an hour before your exam. Save yourself the stress.

12. Don’t try to bullshit your teachers.

They’ve probably heard every excuse in the book, so it’s best to just be honest. If you’re actually having difficulty meeting a deadline go to them beforehand and discuss what sort of help they can offer you. The light went out before I could save my paper is probably not going to fly.

Your time in university is probably the most freedom you’ve had, and the least responsibility you will ever have. Use it to grow, study something you’ve never heard of, make friends with people you wouldn’t have otherwise met and start to take an active role in shaping your own life. We hope you have a great time!
