Mesut Özil Just Married Former Miss Turkey In A Stunning Wedding, But People Aren't Happy

By Sajeer Shaikh | 8 Jun, 2019

For those who may not know him, Mesut Özil is a German professional footballer who plays for the Premier League club, Arsenal. He’s pretty much revered globally and he’s also considered to be one of the best footballers in the world.

When he’s not playing football, or just being a megastar within that realm, he’s usually seen with Amine Gülşe.

Amine is an actress and model of Swedish-Turkish origin. She was also Miss Turkey in 2014 and basically, she and Ozil have been a thing for a while now.

The two got together in 2017 and announced their engagement in 2018. Cuties.

Recently, these two lovebirds tied the knot in a small, but stunning ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel on the banks of the Bosphorus in Istanbul.

The wedding ceremony looks intimate and beautiful at the same time.

It’s all simple and elegant.

Videos have surfaced of the couple dancing as man and wife…

…and I don’t know about you guys, but I’m low key tearing up.

Also, since I’m a huge cake enthusiast, I’m going to drop a picture of their GORGEOUS cake.

Mujhe toh kaatte hue bhi dukh ho.

Can we also take a moment to appreciate Amine, because wow, what an angel?

A queen.

Despite the beautiful ceremony and the coming together of two souls, the wedding ceremony has been a target of severe criticism because Mesut Özil’s best man was Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan has globally been considered a threat to Turkish democracy.

Erdogan’s regime has been a highly criticized one, with Op-Eds and news reports stating the hazards of the same, and for Ozil to align with someone as controversial as him has definitely not worked in his favor – not now, nor in the past.

According to BBC, “Ozil had announced in March this year that he’d asked Mr. Erdogan to be his best man – which, again, sparked criticism in his home country. Helge Braun, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief of staff, told Bild newspaper at the time that it “makes one sad” that Ozil would make such a choice, given the reaction to his meeting with the Turkish president last year.”

Consequently, criticism has been pouring in and all news organizations, too, have taken to report this odd turn of events, giving it preference over the wedding itself. People are upset and the conversation has shifted from the wedding to the decision to make Erdogan the best man.

Some people think it’s a joke.

Others believe it’s disgusting.

Ozil has been heavily criticized, being called “weak” for aligning himself with Erdogan.

People have even mocked Ozil for supporting Erdogan.

This seems ironic, given how Ozil himself announced his resignation from the national squad, citing racism by saying: “I am German when we win, an immigrant when we lose”.

People did not hold back.

Others are commenting on the vibe given off by Erdogan’s presence.

The entire situation has become quite the fiasco and it seems like something people won’t stop talking about for a while. What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments.
