We finally have a face to go with the ‘Aapka matlooba number filhal band hai’ voice!

How many times have you tried to call a friend and, instead of your call getting through, you have been told by a woman’s voice that your remaining balance is insufficient to make the call? For me, it’s more times then I can count. There might have been a few times I had gotten mad at the faceless and nameless woman for jolting me back to my (broke) reality but those days are far behind me. I finally know the woman behind the voice! And she’s pretty awesome.

Farheen Mallick is a radio jockey by profession and a voice-over artist by chance.

She grew up in Quetta but now lives in Karachi. While she graduated with a degree in interior designing, her true calling was being a voice-over artist and host. She began her career as an RJ and saw that a lot of her colleagues did voice-overs for various advertisements and what-not.

When someone asked her if she’d be interested in doing voice-overs as well, she jumped at the chance. She did a few commercials at first and credits a lot of her success in the voice-over industry to Saleem Hassan, a legend who taught her the ropes.

When Farheen first started hearing her voice everywhere; on the phone when her call couldn’t be connected, announcing airing dates for television series or during advertisements, she said it felt pretty weird.

But now? Farheen loves to hear her voice everywhere and actually wants to hear it more!

And as for being constantly recognized when she talks, Farheen says it rarely happens.

She says that when she talks normally, no one ever figures out who she is. But as soon as she uses her ‘professional voice-over’ voice, everyone can usually guess. And a lot of times people get scared at her talent to shift gears and change her voice so seamlessly, with many asking her where the voice suddenly comes from.

Over the years, Farheen has racked up an impressive résumé for voice-over acting but she says her favorite project has to be when she did the voice over for a character in a play called Kosum Sultan.
