Urmila Matondkar speaking for Kashmir is a welcome sight

The Kashmir situation is turning even more serious with every passing minute. India’s Modi-led Government repealed Article 370 of Indian Constitution in August 5. The Article gave special protection to the disputed territory of Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir. In doing so, they’ve made it a territory government by the center and therefore under strict control of Indian Government. All communication has been blocked with international media coverage being suppressed and Kashmiri people being tortured.

 

During these trying times, people look to famous and influential people to speak up for the right side and many Bollywood celebrities have disappointed fans around the world by siding with the fascist Modi Government

Indian celebrities like Kangana Ranaut or Priyanka Chopra have spoken in favor of the Indian Government’s actions. Others, like Deepika Padukone, Shahrukh Khan, Alia Bhatt and Salman Khan have chosen to remain silent on the tense situation in Kashmir.

However, Urmila Matondkar is one of the very few voices with a platform in India who has spoken up against the fascism of the Modi-led Government against Kashmir

It is reported that Urmila lashed out at the Government of India for their actions. She said she has been unable to speak to her in-laws in Kashmir for 22 days.

“My father-in-law and mother-in-law stay there. Both are diabetic, have high blood pressure. Today is the 22nd day, neither me nor my husband have been able to speak to them. We have no clue if they have medicines available at home,” she said.

She also talked about the validity and manner in which the Modi Government clamped down on the freedoms of Kashmiri people and blocked all sorts of communication in the region.

“The question is not only about abrogating Article 370. It was done in inhuman manner,” she told reporters.

It is also worth mentioning that Urmila Matondkar has spoken for Kashmir consistently since the Government of India repealed Article 370

On Eid ul Azha Urmila shared how she was unable to speak to her sick in-laws in Kashmir for weeks because of the communication blockade and wished for better times.

She called out the oppression of the Government of India and their “desperate attempts to show rosy picture of normalcy” in the region when in reality innocent Kashmiris are being tortured by Indian forces

 

Fans around the world, especially Pakistanis were overjoyed with someone in Bollywood still having a spine

 

But of course, Indians are triggered by her comments and trolling her because her husband is a Muslim

 

They’re even calling her names like “flop actress” and a “half-Pakistani” for highlighting Indian Government’s atrocities in Kashmir

While it is heartening to see that Urmila Matondkar spoke up for Kashmir, the treatment she is being meted out just goes to show that the space for dissenting voices and dialogue in the face of fascist governments on both sides is shrinking. Here’s hoping that sanity prevails and people, along with leaders, on both sides can become civilized human beings.
