A lot of times it is a life changing decision because it can completely transform the way you look and feel. And when it comes to dying hair to a crazy color such as a pink or green; basically anything other than what naturally grows on human heads, it is an even bigger decision.

But with the rising trend of what most salons refer to as ‘fashion color’ in the Pakistani youth, we felt it is only fair if you got to know all the facts before you dived into the world of crazy hair colors. And since I have personally been through the process several times, I decided to share my experience.

1. Do Your Research

The first time I went to get my hair dyed, I wanted to get several colors in at once. I wanted to go all out. But my hair colorist told me that this was a bad choice since ‘fashion colors’ do not really suit everyone and thus I should be careful and keep it simpler right now i.e. one solid color. Later on I read upon how certain colors suit certain skin tones and undertones within your skin so it’s better to figure out if you are warm tone or cool tone and plan your color accordingly.

2. Go To A Specialist

If you are dying your hair such a color for the first time it is best to go to the specialist. Save up and make the trip because this is a technical process which lasts several hours and if you have not done it before it could go very wrong. And taking such a risk with your hair is not the best idea. So look for salons near you which have proof that they actually excel at giving people dyes in such colors and then choose the best one for you.

3. Color Cut Is Key

Pakistani hair is usually dark in nature so if you want a funky color such as green or red or pink, you need to bleach your hair first. There is no way around it if you want the color to be loud and proud and not just a faint tinge. Thus it is best if you get a professional to bleach your hair since they know what intensity of bleach they will need to use on your current hair color to get to your desired shade.

4. Damage, Damage and Damage

Going into my hair dye treatment for the first time, I asked my colorist whether this would damage my hair. She told me that while the salon was using quality products, getting such a drastic change and chemicals treated on my hair would definitely mean there would be some damage. The key was to minimize it which only professionals know how to do.

5. Be Ready For The Disapproval

The day after I got my hair dyed bright pink, I felt like all eyes were on me no matter where I went. And considering how loud my hair was, I wouldn’t be surprised. And coupled with this was the disapproval I received from a few elder who did not appreciate my hair making such a bold statement. But meh, it was all worth it.

6. And A Whole New Line Of Products

After I got my hair dyed, I couldn’t use my old shampoo, conditioner; basically ANYTHING. My colorist had warned me against it but I still went ahead and used normal shampoo a try. And it was a BIG mistake. My hair was a complete mess and until I bought products which were marked color-safe I looked like the clown from IT.

7. Say Hello to Healthy Hair Remedies

Once you have put your hair through the 5+ hours process of getting your hair dyed, you will encounter some damage later on. And to combat this you need to spend every weekend using healthy hair totkasIt’s a good idea to regularly oil your hair and do deep conditioning masks once a week. My colorist recommended getting olive oil which you can cook with since that is the purest one out there. And for deep conditioning you can look up ones you can make with things you already have in your kitchen.

8. It’s Always Short Term

When you get your hair dyed a funky color, it never lasts for more than 3 months at best and that too if you take extreme care of it. So be ready to bid your hair farewell soon and be left with a weird blond-ish color which is what your hair looks like after the bleaching. But worry not, now you can get ANOTHER color you have always wanted and that too without the extremely long process like last time. How cool is that.

9. It Takes A Lot Of Monies

Only a handful of salons actually offer services to dye your hair in funky colors. And that means it tends to cost a lot since such a few limited places are doing so! So you need to do your research to see which place is giving the best results in the least amount of money. And apart from the initial blow to your finances when you get your hair dyed, getting specialized products for dyed hair also takes a big chunk out of your budget. So start saving up now for your dream hair!
