This Visually Impaired Girl Is Taking Punjab University To Court For Insulting Her And Not Giving Her Admission

By Rameeza Ahmad | 10 Jan, 2019

This is not the first time Punjab University has landed itself into hot water recently.

After graduating with a medal from her undergrad program in psychology from Forman Christian College in Lahore Kinza naturally wanted to look into postgraduate options in the same subject. She applied to Punjab University, prepped for the exam and expected that she would get in without any issues since her academic record is spotless.

Despite being visually impaired Kinza has a stellar academic record but her recent experience with Punjab University is horrifying.

She has white cataract in her eyes which prevents her from having normal vision and she aids herself with a magnifying glass when she reads but even with a magnifying glass, she needs the font to be bigger than average.

She put in a request at Punjab University to make her entrance exams font size bigger so that she wouldn’t have an issue. But when she went to give the test, she was told she was not allowed to appear for it.

Upon asking why they told her they do not cater to differently abled people. And that if she couldn’t see then how could she ever have a career in psychology anyway.

She says she was thrown out of the test center after being insulted in front of other candidates.

However, Kinza did not back down and started a campaign. She soon found out that there were multitudes of other students who had faced the same treatment. And their cases were all pending.

But Kinza decided to make a case through a human rights lawyer. The case is pointing out how the right to education is universal and one should not be denied this right because of a disability.

Ever since Kinza has begun her campaign for justice, she has received a lot of support. But also a lot of hate.

Kinza spoke with MangoBaaz and shared how students currently enrolled in the clinical psychology program at Punjab University are attacking her incessantly online.

But Kinza says she won’t back down and aims to see her case against mistreatment through. She is looking for justice and wants to get it at all cost. She hopes she and her case will cast a light on this discriminatory behavior and help make changes in the current system.
