Why? Why did I have to find out about Qareens… 

I was minding my business as usual when I came across a Twitter thread that mentioned something called ‘Qareens’ which are apparently a subcategory of Jinns because of their supernatural status.

Having never heard of these things, I thought I’d look them up. Big mistake.

What I found out about Qareens, is the reason I wake up several times during the night, just scared. Yep. But then again, I scare quite easily. So you’re probably wondering what a Qareen is as well. They are usually referred to as Qareens or Hamzaads in our part of the world. And there is a lot of lore in Islam that supports and refers to their existence. So that’s just great.

Qareens are always with you, apparently. Qareen is an Arabic word that literally translates to ‘constant companion’.

And that is pretty accurate since they are like your shadow and never leave you alone… your Qareen is always with you. They’re probably reading this over your shoulder right now.

There are accounts of Hadith in Sahih Muslim, where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was referring to his Qareen and how his Qareen had either converted to Islam or just that his Qareen was good. Because Qareens are not generally supposed to be good… but no one knows whether Qareens can be made good or if that was just something the Prophet (PBUH) was able to achieve.

Qareens are a type of Shaytaan apparently because of their evil nature and every person has one. Every single human being on earth has a personal Qareen.

WOW, WHAT A COMFORTING THOUGHT. Apparently, Qareens accompany you at all times so that they can lead you astray. They are pretty much evil and you have to protect yourself from them.

A lot of people believe the Qareen is just the alter ego to your soul. It is essentially your soul’s evil twin. And this brings me to my next thought, what do Qareens look like…?

There are some who believe that your Qareen looks just like you.

And they can shapeshift into any form. But thankfully, they are not visible to the human eye unless you go out of your way to make them appear in front of you. It requires a lot of knowledge about spiritual things to be able to pull that off anyway.

According to lore, they grow weaker when you do good deeds and only grow stronger when you indulge in bad deeds. And since they have accompanied you from birth, they know all there is to know about you.

And according to some, fortune-tellers can communicate with Qareens which is why they know everything there is to know about you. What a comforting thought.

Honestly, I am going to be constantly anxious now knowing there is a Qareen with me at all times. I was better off without having this information but now that I know about it, I want all of you to know about it as well so we can suffer together.

And as usual, like with any folklore or any supernatural being, there are a lot of disputed descriptions and beliefs. And this piece only covers what I saw as the general consensus but there are a lot of different accounts and beliefs when it comes to Qareens.
