Yesterday, Christian Louboutin released pictures of his latest shoe, one that looked very similar to a shoe we know very well in Pakistan- the Peshawari Chappal.
He called the shoe, the ‘Imran Sandal’, and our minds went to the Imran in power, Prime Minister Imran Khan.
It turns out that assumption was wrong.
You know what they say about assumptions, they make an ass out of you and me.
Khair, the Imran that they are actually named after is artist extraordinaire, Imran Qureshi.
Imran Qureshi is a world famous artist who has exhibited his work in Lahore, London, New York and Hong Kong (to name a few). He also has the honor of having his work be displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Imran Qureshi is known for his large area-specific installations.
One of his most memorable pieces in Pakistan was from the Lahore Biennale, where his work was displayed in the Lahore Fort for all to see.
The artist took to Instagram to thank Christian Louboutin for the massive honor.
Back in 2017, the ace designer had visited Imran Qureshi’s exhibition in Lahore and also made a trip to the National College of Arts. Soon after this, Louboutin had come out with the ‘Lahore Flats’. It’s unclear if Louboutin and Qureshi knew each other before 2017, but clearly, they have met since his visit to Pakistan too.
Up till Imran Qureshi clarified things, we weren’t alone in mistaking which Imran was being referred to.
The ‘Imran Sandal’ is just one more feather in Qureshi’s cap.
Aspiring artists have yet another reason to look up to Imran Qureshi.
His body of work stands out from the rest and has clearly drawn international attention.
Pakistanis were just so proud of his achievements.
Keep making these fantastic masterpieces, Imran! You’ve made Pakistan proud over your career, and here’s hoping that continues for many years to come.
