A pilgrimage as holy as the Hajj, one does not expect harassment stories to emerge. However, women are coming forward with stories that prove that a holy place is no guarantee that harassment won’t occur.

Several women have faced harassment while performing Hajj

They never opened up about it because of several reasons. One is that one does not expect such an incident to happen. Second, when it actually does happen one is left shocked.

It all started when Sabica Khan took to Facebook to talk about her experience

In a piece by Stepfeed, Sabica highlighted her ordeal. It happened when she was performing Tawaaf around the Kaaba. Someone put a hand on her waist and because she was not expecting anything like that to happen, she told herself that it was a mistake and moved ahead. It wasn’t until it happened again that she realized that it was entirely on purpose. It did not matter that tawaaf was being performed, and the guy kept on doing it again. She talks about how this incident overshadows the Hajj because she no longer felt safe.

A very important thing that Sabica highlighted was that she was afraid to share her experience because it would hurt the religious sentiments of people. However, it is important to talk about this because people should know that women are not safe anywhere, not even the most holy place considered by Muslims.

When asked why she wasn’t prepared for this, Sabica said

This post encouraged a lot of other women to share their experiences as well. This shows that it was not just an individual event and happens quite frequently

Even men shared how they have heard such stories from family members, friends and colleagues

Some people pointed out that being able to perform Hajj is no guarantee of a good character at all

It is highly shocking that women have to go through such an experience at such a revered place

Women need to come forward and share their stories, so that people start talking about it and get around to solving the problem. No one should have to go through this.
