The highly awaited drama serial, inspired from the controversial social media star’s life is about to raise its curtains. ‘Baaghi,’ starring the effervescent Saba Qamar and Osman Khalid Butt as protagonists. After months of hushed teasers surfacing ever so often, a more tangible promo has released in the growing hype to the serial premiere.
We’re taken far back into a starkly different life for Saba Qamar’s character in the village
It shows her close relationship with her younger brother unravels, whom she seems to ardently care for.
Despite her life as an “ordinary” village girl, her impassioned dream of making it big still lingers in the back of her mind
We’re introduced to one of the men who pursues her, played by Ali Kazmi
He is tackled by her overbearing brothers who threaten him
And the audience is given an uncomfortable glimpse into her traumatic home, with a dominating father who is intent on marrying her off
We’re given a glimpse into how men in her life felt threatened by her outspokenness, enough to raise their hands at her
Even her lover tries to dominate and scare her into silence
After a brief altercation between the two, she decides to leave the confinements of her suffocating life and head to the city
It is at this point that the promo significantly transitions to an entirely different woman who is seen frolicking on her bed as she begins, presumably, her contentious videos
And Saba Qamar’s character’s name is also revealed
A quick shot of a YouTube search reveals Saba’s name as Kanwal Baloch.
Along with a possible backstory to where the name comes from
We also see a quick shot of her Saba’s tattoo, and a male voice-over saying, “mene tumhara naam change kar diya“. Her voice is enunciated, with varying fluctuations in her tone as she tries to emulate a more western-esque accent as she learns English.
A seemingly well off Osman Khalid Butt pops up as he expresses his willingness to be with her despite her controversial stardom
A montage follows as we see the dizzying downfall of Kanwal as she breaks down in spirit
One thing is certain – the promo is raw and serves to be a crisp telling of Qandeel’s life and what plagued her. Whether or not there are discrepancies that will pop up between the biopic and actualities of Qandeel’s life, is something to look out for.
