Not a great way to celebrate the holiest month in Islam.
Earlier last week, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad held an iftari at the Serena Hotel. What was meant to be a calm and peaceful gathering to celebrate the holy month of Ramazan, instead turned out to be yet another point for India to have against Pakistan in our political games.
According to the Indian press, Pakistani guests who were invited to the iftari were allegedly being intimidated by Pakistani security agencies, imploring the guests not to attend as well as using physical intimidation if they did.
The Indian High Commission just released a statement outlining detailed events of the iftari, and how guests were allegedly being harassed by personnel.
In the press release, it was revealed that allegedly, Pakistani security agencies were reaching out to Pakistanis who were invited, to dissuade them from attending the event entirely. This included guests who were coming into Islamabad from Karachi and Lahore for it as well.
Apparently, the security at the hotel even physically prohibited guests from coming inside and basically laid ‘siege,’ all around it. The statement also reads that a large fork-lift was kept outside of the hotel and that it was even used a couple of times to remove the vehicles of guests attending the iftari.
According to them, around three hundred guests were turned away, including parliamentarians, government officials and media representatives among many others.

When diplomatic staff members of the Indian High Commission tried to question the security staff and officers, they were met with more intimidation tactics as well as pushing, shoving and the threatening of bodily harm.
In the statement, the Indian High Commissioner called the behavior of the security officers crossing all lines of civilized behavior and that the display was completely counter-productive for our ‘bi-lateral’ relationship.
The statement has been circulated, discussed and dissected on social media and Pakistanis and Indians alike have been condemning the behavior at the event, if it is true
Indian High Commission in Islamabad is justified in its protest, but MEA/MHA here must explain the harassment of guests at the Pakistan High Commission for their National Day in March this year. Time to give up using undiplomatic and frankly undignified methods with each other. https://t.co/vvH0XjtBWb

@IndiainPakistan It is highly condemnable that the Government of Pakistan @ImranKhanPTI plays positive role in investigating those who do so. Here also is the @Paknewdelhi it should be kept in mind.

When will India & Pakistan learn to behave like grown-ups? On Pakistan National Day in March, India had stopped guests attending Pakistan High Commission's Event in New Delhi. Now, Pakistan reciprocates. https://t.co/cHUbcxRP1l via @timesofindia

People on Twitter are calling the behavior a complete violation of the Vienna Convention, an international treaty made to adhere to the peaceful and diplomatic relations among independent countries.

It seems as though the event did not go as planned and now that the new government of India has been sworn in with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as their leader, it is of the utmost importance that our country and our politicians react in the best possible and diplomatic way that they can.
This is an important step for our relationship and in dealing with an alleged display of intimidation that took place under our capital city’s watch. All we can do is hope for a logical explanation and that this incident does not set off another on the other side of our border to our own, as we have seen happen before.
