The Arab guy meme’s origin isn’t a laughing matter at all…
Memes are the social currency of the 21st century. Considering that a new meme pops up every day and takes the world by storm, it often gets hard to discover where they originated from. A lot of times people don’t really care where the meme came from as long as they understand the context in which it is supposed to be used. Similarly, a meme of an angry Arab guy walking into a room with a scowl on his face spread on the internet like wildfire.
This angry Arab dude has been going viral because he’s been turned into a meme but no one really questioned where the meme had come from or what the young Arab was angry about.

So we all pretty much agree that the meme is funny. Now let’s talk about the guy in the video.
His name is Jawad Bendaoud, who has just been sentenced to 4 years in prison for harboring two terrorists who were behind a terrorist attack in France at Bataclan theater in 2015.
He has been dubbed by the local media as the ‘Daesh Landlord’. The video of him scowling after entering the room is from one of his court appearances. Jawad is still claiming to be innocent. While he admitted that he was a drug dealer, the denied knowing that the two men he let stay in his apartment had been terrorists.
Knowing the story behind the meme sure does give you an entirely new perspective on it. I almost feel guilty for finding it funny. This brings in the questions about whether or not it’s okay to make memes out of such serious situations? A lot of people have no idea about who Jawad is and what the context of the video was. Which means that they have no idea they are making relatable memes with someone who has been sentenced to jail for charges related to terrorism.
