SZABIST Is Hosting A Massive Media Festival With Lots Of Celebrity Guests. Here Are All The Details

If you’re a film and media enthusiast, the SZABIST Media Festival or ZMF is what you need to be keeping tabs on! As of late, Karachi has been seeing numerous of art and media festivals pop up here and there, all offering immense exposure to the people of Karachi and making art a medium to express ourselves even more, and more often at that.

The SZABIST Media Festival is an annual celebration of nationwide talent and prowess in media, organized and hosted by the graduating batch of SZABIST’s Bachelors of Media Sciences program.

The Festival aims to bridge the gap between student portfolio, and the exposure it receives on a larger platform.

The theme for this year’s festival is “Discovering Pakistan,” and it aims to attract film, documentary, photography and design projects from all around the country. 

The competing categories for this year include design, photography, documentary, and filmmaking.

The week-long festival has a different sub-theme for each day, exploring different aspects of arts and culture as the Festival moves along!

The first day is all about Media as its focus, featuring the renowned director and producer Sultana Siddiqui as the keynote speaker. She is the director and president of Hum Network Limited, and has the achievement of being the first woman in South Asia to establish a TV station.

Jawad Sharif’s Indus Blues will be screened later towards the closing, which is a film based on a journey spanning the 2,000-mile length of the Indus.

It showcases the rich musical traditions across the diverse, and colorful cultures of Pakistan.

The second day will be featuring Design, Communication & Photography, therefore getting into a more specific field of media sciences. The impressive jury for the day consists of the best photographers and designers of the country.

For instance, maestro-marketer and design guru, Faraz Maqsood Hamidi, who is also the author of the longest-running column on advertisement in the world, will be present.

Tazeen Hussain, Head – Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Design at Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture, Karachi, will be there too.

Alongside other guests, these folks will be gracing moderated panels that will be super insightful with regards to the world of Design, Communication, and Photography.

The third day is all about narratives across digital spheres, and about the future and heritage of cinema in Karachi – a city which has served as an important hub of art and media in all ages!

The renowned rapper, Ali Gul Pir, whose verses are a reflection of social and political landscapes in the most relatable way ever, is all set to attend the event. 

Gul Zaib Shakeel, the brilliant Head Writer at Teeli, will also be in attendance.

Everyone’s favorite, George Fulton, will also be at SZABIST. 

Akbar Chaudhry, the renowned comedian, will be moderating a panel. 

AND they have Dolly Singh from iDiva heading over to Pakistan for a panel as well. 

The most exciting part? Tina Sani will be talking about her experiences in the industry, while also commenting on the current state of the musical world and where it’s headed.

Capping it off will be the seminar on the future of cinema and Karachi, with the panel featuring renowned directors from each of Pakistani film era: Nabeel Qureshi, Jami, Fizza Ali Mirza, Nadeem Baig, and Mehreen Jabbar. 

Musician and filmmaker, Babar Sheikh, will be moderating a panel. Other renowned guests include Kamal Khan, Fizza Ali Meerza, Sadia Jabbar, Habib Paracha and Bee Gul.

Day 4 is all about the world of Journalism and PR, and will highlight the “inner circles of women in journalism,” and the mechanisms of a well-oiled PR machine. 

The guest line-up for the day would include, Zoya Naqvi, Zoha Tunio, Manal Faheem Khan. Fatima Niazi, Tehmina Khaled,  Samra Muslim, Fatima Haroon, Ali Rehman Khan, and Imran Raza Kazmi. Shahjehan Saleem, a journalist and faculty member at SZABIST, will be moderating a panel.

The second last day would be exploring the journey of film, again focusing on women in the cinema space. 

The guests for the day will include Mansha Pasha, Fifi Haroon, Osman Khalid Butt, Hareem Farooq, and Sadia Jabbar.
