Indie musician Jimmy Khan’s ‘Madam’ is an ode to one of the most marginalized communities in Pakistan – transgenders. The song tells the tale of two transgender best friends with a glimpse into a day in their lives. The music video is a far cry from your sugar-coated glitz and glamour. It radiates a vibrancy but is an oxymoronic facade. The upbeat look is a cloak to a darker, far more morbid undertone of an alienated pocket of society and their grappling with struggles.
Posters of Bollywood icons are plastered on the walls of a pink and blue room, with fairy lights draped around as we are introduced to the two protagonists

They get dolled up before they begin their day

As they take the streets both are immediately subjected to manhandling by two men

Throughout, we see both protect each other as they are each subjected to prejudice.
Their resilience and fearlessness have both molded them into pillars who remain unfazed.

A quick montage shows various altercations with people from all walks of life
Be it with a policeman, followed by a stroll in a local bazaar where both are scrutinized by a female shopper, transgender community lives their lives always on the defensive.

Then an uncomfortable eye-up by an aged religious man perched outside the masjid,

Both return home later that evening, and it is at this point we see one breaking. Some days are harder than others.

And it’s even more profound when it’s just the two, battling a raging storm

As one reminisces over an old photograph of her loved ones, consolation promptly arrives in the arms of her friend who warmly embraces her

The message is clear – all that matters is to have someone by your side – someone who is your backbone in pressing times

The day isn’t over – a mujra with overly-zealous guests exhausts both and here, too, they’re both severely manhandled

It’s all very quick, but paints a hapless reality – respect for transgenders dwindles in a proliferating belittling society

But they both depart after gathering ample money, because they still have to feed themselves
