Dear Ammis: On Behalf Of Pakistani Men, I'm Sorry We Take You For Granted In Ramazan

By Asad | 1 Jun, 2019

So guys, since the holy month of Ramazan is well up and running, I’m taking this opportunity to write about one of the biggest regrets I’ve had during the past Ramazans. And, I’ll try to make amends accordingly.

Without a doubt, the month is full of love and peace with countless barkaats including the perks of having Sehri and Iftaari. Amidst all the barkaats that are bestowed upon us in Ramazan, the biggest one we tend to undermine are our Ammas.

It makes me sad to realize that while our Ammas work all day in the kitchen preparing Sehri and Iftaari for us we spend our time resting the whole day.

I’ve seen the memes, okay. I get it. Men don’t usually help around the house. And seeing my own mother work tirelessly in the kitchen, I truly do wish I’d helped out more during the past Ramazans. Maybe I’ve offered once or twice. But I get that it’s not enough. After all, unka bhi toh roza hai.

It’s truly unfortunate that many sons, much like myself, laze around all day while our Ammas – work tirelessly without complaining.

Though from time to time we like to go out for Sehri and Iftaari with family and friends, most of the cooking is done at home usually. And our Ammas are the ones at home who put all their effort in preparing Sehri and Iftari all day long while we spend our time scrolling through the internet looking at memes.

We are quick to request (more like demand, if I’m being honest) our favorite dishes at the time of Iftaari. However, we ignore the fact that they stand in front of the stove, in their roza, in this shadeed garmi.

Aur hamaray nakhrey hi nahi khatam hotay!

Chalo, I guess the very least that we could do is appreciate their efforts, right? But, when was the last time you even did that? Yep, can’t remember? Me neither. That’s because I’m just as guilty of taking my mother for granted as anyone else. And I’m truly ashamed.

At the end of the day, hum jaise bhi hain, khush naseeb hain ke our mothers love and accept us. Heck, they even spoil us, though we don’t deserve it. We can apologize to our Ammas, and help out more often, not just in Ramazan, but around the year. After all, it’s never too late to do the right thing and show gratitude.

Have you taken your Amma for granted too? Let us know how you’ll be fixing it.
