Ah, yes – love. For some, falling in love is considered to be one of the most enriching experiences in one’s life. For others, it is written away as a mistake – a folly that must not be committed once more. But what exactly are people trying to find when they fall in love? A best friend? A life partner? Someone who could be a source of comfort? The answer lies in the summation of all of these traits and much more. When people fall in love, they try to find ‘the one.’ They try to find their soulmate.
Pragmatically, your soulmate will never be as perfect as movies make soulmates out to be. However, here are a few ways in which you know you’ve found ‘the one:’
1. You’re comfortable around them the way you’re not wit anyone else
Even if it takes you a while to be comfortable around others, you find yourself being the most comfortable around the person you’re in love with.
2. You speak your mind with them and never censor yourself
You can unabashedly let out your weird side and bare your soul without any fear of judgment. There’s always a constant feeling of acceptance that makes you feel right at home.
3. You don’t have any reason to feel insecure
Your soulmate is your biggest cheerleader and will always try to eradicate your insecurities, instead of adding to them. They also won’t believe in childish mind games and won’t give you any reason to feel insecure in the first place.
4. There’s a healthy and stable form of communication
You can talk about anything and everything. Stuff that bothers you, stuff that you like or dislike – none of it needs to stay bottled up. You can talk to your bae about pretty much everything under the sun in an open way.
5. You guys have “your song”
Cheesy hai kaafi, but apparently, when you find ‘the one,’ all the songs you hear start making sense. You know, the really deep ones with meaningful lyrics? Yeah – you’ll be listening to those songs and suddenly you’ll feel like you can relate to the lyrics.
6. Being with them makes you feel more empowered
When no one else is in your corner, they will have your back. Being with them is the most genuine source of joy because you actually feel important around them. Their love and affection also do wonders for your self-esteem.
7. You’ve noticed personal growth because of them
Being with them, you’re able to map out how far you’ve come from the person you used to be. And you’ll notice that it’s all been for the better.
8. You’re always trying to be better for each other
In order to be the best possible versions of yourself, both of you will keep trying to improve – physically, mentally and emotionally.
9. You genuinely love spending time and making memories with them
If there’s anyone in the world you’d actively choose to spend time with – it’s them. You love being around them and they love being around you. There’s just a certain level of easiness to the relationship. You get a best friend out of it, too, which means you get to make a ton of memories with your BFF.
10. They’re your pillar of support
No matter what, you will always have them to turn to. They don’t ghost on you, they’re attentive and they’re there for you when you need them. And, obviously, you extend the same courtesy as well.
11. There’s a great amount of trust between you two
There’s a certain level of trust that is established to determine you’ve found your soulmate. When you can blindly trust someone with your life, that’s when you know you’ve found ‘the one.’
12. Your happiness in intertwined with theirs (and vice versa)
Your achievements make them happy. Their achievements make you happy. And you both try to do everything you can to keep each other happy too. It’s just mutually beneficial.
13. They’re your person
At the end of the day, your soulmate is your person. They’re your 4 a.m. distress call and your source of affection and comfort. Essentially, they’re your safe house, and you’re theirs.
Only a fortunate few are able to find their soulmates. After going through this checklist, do you think you’ve found yours?
