‘Cheekh’ has been captivating audiences across Pakistan. The show stands apart from the rest since it’s a murder mystery and a woman’s fight for justice. The show has had a character come back into play recently, and he is changing things up in the show.
Emmad Irfani plays Shayan, Mannat’s husband. His character is absent at the beginning of the show since he lives in America, but he makes an important appearance in the show.
Wajih, in his ploy to remove Mannat from his house and family, makes up an affair. He alleges that Mannat is having an affair with their younger sister, Haya’s, fiance Adil. Everyone believes this story, and at the beginning of this week’s episode, it seems like Shayan believes it too.
Shayan asks Mannat to pack her things up and leave. What follows is a silent car ride to Mannat’s house. When her panicked mother asks if they got divorced, Shayan gives the reply OF THE YEAR.
‘Mein tum par lagaye hua ilzaam ko sach saabat nahin karna chahta’. He then reveals his plan for keeping her at a distance from his toxic household and eventually having a house of their own.
He, literally, fights his family for his wife and for her truth. He vows to never leave Mannat and to have Wajih hang for his crimes.
Towards the end of the episode, we also see Mannat and Shayan share a very intimate moment.
Shayan and Mannat are a unique couple in Pakistani drama history. They both stand up each other and support each other, as well as being openly affectionate and loving.
It is rare to see male characters support their wives so openly and so bravely in our dramas; the usual trajectory is that he doesn’t believe her, makes her life hell, but somehow at the end, he figures out he was wrong and then loves her forever. Shayan is a break away from that norm, and people are IN LOVE WITH IT.

People are loving how Shayan is a different ‘husband’ character.
So far so good. Showing Shayaan as such a husband was a breath of fresh air, as otherwise the usual trend in our dramas is that husbands are the first to abandon their wives. Has been set up nicely, if only it keeps going well.

Clearly, Pakistani drama writers are evolving. It’s a slow process, but it is finally happening.

Mannat’s character is extremely strong and brave. Up till Shayan’s return, she had to deal with Wajih and his plotting against her. She stood her ground and fought as best as she could. For fans of the show, it is a relief to see her finally get an ally, and that ally is in the shape of her husband, Shayan.
