All The Times Pakistani Girls Have Been Told ‘Shaadi Ke Baad Ker Lena' By Their Parents

By Sarah Babar | 11 Apr, 2017

As girls living in society, we’ve always been told at some time in our lives that we can’t do something or the other because we’re girls. Moreover, whenever we do want to tip the boundaries and actually make something of ourselves, we’re told ‘beta, shaadi ke baad ker lena’. But they don’t realise ke ager susraal bhi me’ika jesa mil gaya, tau bus hum tau gaye.

Anywho, these are all the times me and my friends have been responded to with the age-old ‘Shaadi ke baad ker lena”:

1. Higher education

You know when you muster up all your courage and finally go up to your dad with a university’s acceptance, telling him you’d want to do your Masters? And then he turns around and says ‘shaadi ke baad kerlena’? That moment.

2. Travelling alone

This is the worst, especially if all your friends get to go to Khanpur and Mukshpuri, and you’re not allowed to? That you should just plan all these things with your husband, once you’re married? Ew.

3. Theater, or acting in general

Aye haye *cue emotional drama*

HUMARI BETI AUR THEATRE? HUMAAREY GHER KE LOG AESE KAAM NAI KERTE, UNDERSTOOD?? If your husband lets you, then you can. Okay?

4. Driving

Forget Diana Driving School, you’re not allowed behind the wheel because ucchi bachiyaan gaari nahi chalati. Besides, bhai ko bol do woh le jayega. Oh, woh gher per nai hai? Then, wait.

5. Coming home slightly late at night

Did you not know your curfew is sunset? If someone in the muhalla finds out or sees you, tau hum kahin moun dikhane ke qabil nahi rahein gey.

If you want a boyfriend/girlfriend, shaadi ke baad kerlena.

7. Staying over at a friend’s

No matter how long you’ve known your friend for. Doesn’t matter how close you guys are. You can’t stay over.

8. Pursuing a career

Once again, if your husband allows, you can work. If not, then no.

9. Wanting to join the “arts” field

Stop dreaming. Lol.

11. Talking to a specimen of the opposite gender

Bus. You can stop right there.
