This makeup artist from Peshawar is just one example of how Pakistan is full of immense artistic talent. While many people may not appreciate the art of makeup for what it is, makeup can be an extremely difficult art form. While there isn’t a shortage of makeup artists in Pakistan, it can be difficult to find a really talented special effects (sfx) artist.
Darakhshan Uzair, a Peshawar native currently living in Islamabad, is a certified chartered accountant living two lives. Working a 9-5 job, she still finds time to do what she loves – SFX makeup.

What makes her looks so amazing is that Darakhshan is completely self-taught and learned techniques through trial and error from watching YouTube videos.

When asked what her favorite look to date was, Darakhshan told MangoBaaz,
“I think it would have to be my most recent look, Valak – the nun. The moment I saw the movie I knew I needed to recreate the demon. I didn’t just do the makeup but also hand sewed the entire costume. My most favorite part of being an MUA is how people react to my looks. It makes me feel accomplished when they are frightened or grossed out. (in this context only – haha!)”

“I’m living two lives. One all nerdy and the other very artsy. When I’m not playing with numbers, I run my own production house that I co-founded with my best friend to make stop-motion animations. I’m also an amateur SFX makeup artist – an interest I developed while watching movies and TV shows.”

The most ironic part is that Darakshan cringes at the sight of blood. When asked about how she conquers her fears while doing makeup, she said:
” It is ironic but I really do cringe at the sign of (real) blood. Whenever I’m working I am very mindful of all the products I am using and that the blood in my photos that others might find ghastly is just food color.”
