We Need To Talk About Sara From “Humsafar” And How She Was One Of Pakistan's Greatest Villains

By Arslan Athar | 7 Jun, 2018

Yes, I know, we’ve talked about Humsafar quite a bit. But really, if you think about it, it is justified. The show was one of Pakistan’s biggest hits and the leading actor and actress won hears at the time, however, we don’t talk about a very important character. Sara is usually ignored in most discussions of the show.

If you think about it, she really was Pakistan’s greatest villain.

She’s introduced to us as a ‘modern’ girl, therefore Sara was meant to be the opposite of Khirad, the ‘conservative’ one. There’s an instant clash between the two ends of the spectrum and that clash happens to be over Ashar. One woman lusts after him while the other is bound to him by her mother’s dying wish.

In the case of Ashar, his family’s wish takes precedence over all other things therefore, we see Khirad enter the household as the new bahu. When this happens, we see Sara take a dramatic turn, making a vow to herself to never stop pursuing Ashar, no matter the cost and no matter who comes in her way.

As the show progresses we see the character develop. All that matters to her is her own well being and happiness. She lives life by her own rules.

Her end goal, till the very end, is to win Ashar over. She uses all the linkages and connections in her life to do so.

She masterfully sets up a trap for Khirad to fall in, and to make her plan foolproof, alongside her cousin, Khizar, she enlists Farida, Ashar’s mom. Sarah uses Khizar’s feelings for her against him and while doing so she knows he’s blind to what she’s really doing. She takes his weakness and uses it for her own benefit.

Also, after her plan to defame Khirad initially succeeds, she still fails at winning Ashar over. There is actually a pretty interesting turn we see in Sarah at this point; before her diabolical plan is executed, Sara is portrayed as someone who cares about herself and will go to any end to get what she wants. Afterward, we see her character shift and become more vulnerable. Ever since then, we start to see Sara falter. She clings onto Ashar and the hope that he will wait for her, just as he is waiting for him.

Her final fall comes as Khirad makes a comeback in Ashar’s life. It’s the final blow to her plan, she simply had not accounted for the fact that she could come back.

Her entire plan just unravels and she, unfortunately, begins to lose her mind over everything that transpires. The end of Sara in the show is one that is pretty unfortunate and sad. Often I think about how the problem of Sara with regards to Ashar and Khirad could have been resolved without a suicide. I mean, I love ‘Humsafar’, but this part of the show really never sat well with me. We didn’t need to see a death in order to have two people come together as life partners. The end of the show, however, doesn’t change the fact that Sarah really was one of Pakistan’s greatest villains.
