When one thinks of karahi gosht they think of yum, succulent meat, a masalaydar saalan and a garma garam naan paired with it.
What one doesn’t think of is this:
Wait, WHAT?
On a calm February morning, as I opened my laptop at the office, I came across this very picture on my newsfeed with the caption “issay karahi gosht kehtay hain?” At first, I wondered if it was just a joke. Then I joked to myself how this is why we have trust issues HAHA. I MEAN, EXACTLY HOW DOES THIS LOOK LIKE KARAHI GOSHT? Any sane human being would ask the same question when what they see in front of themselves is kaalay chanay, some vegetables, with imli sauce in a cup. But my experience has taught me not to jump to conclusions that fast – sometimes common sense can be a letdown.
People had a lot of what appears to be jokes (we’re not sure) about the name of this snack
One sister had called it kunna and a bhaijaan had said rabri mix. Another comment called it sushi and we were laughing too. By this time, any person who doesn’t understand trolling would be very confused.
Others were quick to agree and said they do call it karahi gosht
Some ladies were even reminiscing about this karahi gosht being their after-school snack, some called this food nostalgic… by now even the best of us would be very shaken.
A Yahoodi saazish
Or a vegetarian saazish? Or as my colleague expressed, “THAT’S NOT KARAHI, THAT’S DHOKA IN A CUP!”
Then there were some equally as puzzled
People like me who thought this was a spicier version of a chana aalu chaat. We’re going through each and every comment trying to convince ourselves our life hasn’t been completely a lie, NO THIS CANNOT BE.
First, respectfully, let us solve this conspiracy. Let us deal with this mind-boggling mystery at hand, please.
Turns out this has been called a karahi gosht ever since it was introduced in Old Lahore. We see and have it in Liberty Market every time we go shopping. Those of us present with our families at the Fortress Stadium Qaumi San’ati Numaish (sigh good old times) and who cared to ask what it was called already knew this famous and insanely loved street food was indeed called karahi gosht.
But WHY? WAJAH?
Well, a nice bhai cleared the confusion and said it was simply because the real karahi gosht and this jaali karahi gosht, despite their differences, had some similarities. One was the rich proteins they contained and the other their spices.
I agree myself that even as Lahoris and being accustomed to spices, this karahi gosht cup is spicyyyy. It burns your tongue and makes you scream just like in the 7up ads LOL.
So we’ve reached the end of this street karahi gosht investigation
And we can say that this cup of tasty goodness, ladies and gentlemen, is called Karahi Gosht. We’re still shook though.
Are you shocked or did you already know? Let us know in the comments.
