Buckle up, there’s some pretty great news.
Pakistan is (allegedly) set to open the world’s first fee-free university 50 kilometers from Lahore in Kasur District, Punjab this Independence Day.
Dr. Mohammed Amjad Saqib, the executive director of Akhuwat, a micro-finance firm offering interest-free loans in Pakistan, has started this initiative in order to provide easy access to higher education in the country. Speaking to another publication, here’s what he had to say:
“Education is the ultimate solution to our problems. We can’t progress and compete with international community unless we are ahead in education. But it is a pity that a boy coming from a poor family may be able to complete a 10-year education but can’t receive higher education. We are not doing justice with our talent.”
Akhuwat University will be the first of its kind – a residential university with no tuition fee.
Every child and adult deserves the right to have an education and the Akhuwat University is being built to fulfill the dream of a poverty-free society.
The university will be a national institute where 20% of students will come from each province of Pakistan. It offers pre-medical, pre-engineering and ICT courses.
To get entry into the university, a student must obtain 75% marks in matriculation examinations followed by an entrance examination conducted at the university.
Pakistanis could not be more proud of this initiative on the road to end poverty in Pakistan.
