A few days back, Amar Abbasi – a Pakistani woman based in Karachi, shared a heart-wrenching story of her encounter with a child cancer patient and her mother on his flight from Karachi to Islamabad. The post went viral on Pakistani social media and everybody began praying for the little champ’s early recovery. While talking to Mangobaaz last week, Amar told that she has been in touch with the mother of the child ever since they met on the plane.
On February 25, Amar shared another Facebook post but this time it was a request for urgent crowd-sourcing for the little kid’s treatment.
“As most of you know, most doctors had given up hope on his treatment. Over the course of the last one week with numerous people’s help, a renowned professional took him in for a consultation. The child’s blast cells have increased more than ever before, and he does not have much time left. He requires two months of additional chemotherapy, followed by a bone marrow transplant. The cumulative cost of this treatment is estimated at Rs. 40 Lakhs (12 for chemo, 28 for transplant). The parents hail from a simple middle-class background, and after having sold their house and assets to afford the last two years of the child’s treatments, have only Rs. 4 Lakhs left in cash savings. There is therefore a deficit of Rs. 36 Lakhs to go,” wrote Amar in her Facebook post.
“If only 300 individuals contribute Rs. 10,000/- each, we will have gathered Rs. 30 Lakhs, InshaAllah,” mentioned the post. If we go by Amar’s tentative calculations, the number is very much attainable. .
In less than 24 hours, Amar was able to gather 12 lakhs of a total target of 36 lakhs. At this point, they’re collecting contributions via cash, Western Union/MoneyGram for those abroad. There is now a hospital bank account dedicated for this purpose too but there’s a watch out.
“We finally have a bank account in which we’re accepting contributions for the little 8 year old cancer patient’s treatment. The account details are below. Just one key watch-out is that it’s the hospital’s bank account and so to make sure that your contribution is ONLY spent towards this child’s treatment, you need to transfer money in two crucial steps:
1. Please inbox me once done so I can keep tab with the hospital on amount of contributions collected so far.
2. Please include the child’s MR number into the “reference” box while transferring online. This is MANDATORY as otherwise the hospital has no means to know this contribution came for him.
