Pakistanis love the entire concept of marriage.
Think about it: we have an entire season dedicated to shaadis. Additionally, marriage is seen to be the driving force behind a lot of decisions made for and by women.
“Agar larki doctor nahi bani toh shaadi kaun karega?”
“Beti, khaana pakaana nahi seekhogi toh sasural walon ko khush kaise rakhogi?”
Sound familiar?

However, what society fails to see is that shaadi may not necessarily be an end goal for women. That’s why Instagrammer @dupattadiaries is speaking out about this very concept.

In her post, she talks about how we tend to train women for marriage

Moreover, she mentions how there are other things that need to prioritized

Her post carries a lot of weight in terms of the message she’s trying to convey. While marriage may eventually be an important part of many lives, it need not shape the course of your journey.

Many women felt it beautifully dealt with the issue at hand

And others offered their opinion as well

Additionally, some pointed out that they’re glad to see that change is happening

Many women agreed that shaadi is given a lot of importance

And this individual shared how she felt homeless when her marriage ended

Some shared how a girl’s dreams are crushed after marriage

Overall, women were in agreement over the bitter truth the post conveyed

Shaadi holds a lot of significance in every society. At some point or another, it is seen as the way forward for any relationship. But does training our girls for it from a young age not make shaadi seem like the ultimate goal? Isn’t there a lot more to life than settling down? And honestly, does education not need to be a priority? Perhaps, instead of training girls for their weddings, we should focus more on their grooming and parhai, nahi?
