Women in Pakistan have been showing the world that they can pretty much shatter any and every stereotype and literally do anything. From climbing mountains to stepping up for human rights to being champions at cricket to kickass mannequin challenges to being insane visual artists to what not!
These women are taking it further up a notch
This is Pakistan’s first women’s rugby team and YES, they’ve gone international!
The women made their international debut this weekend in Laos at the Asian Women’s Rugby Sevens
They competed against teams from other Asian countries including India, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
The team was formed last year and has been training under their coach Shakil Ahmed
And for them to be competing in an international competition in spite of a lack of funding from officials, and rugby being perceived as a man’s sport, in the country, is a very very big deal.
The fact that, apart from cricket, funding for sports is minimal in the country, more so for female athletes, these girls are giving the sport their all, and are bent upon putting Pakistan on the map for all the right reasons.
Training like this, the rest of us women really need to up our game, as well.
The ladies are serving as inspiration for girls, young and old, in the country
Coming from a place where women stepping out of the house to play sports is still a new concept, one that might be scary for a lot of families. Team member Mehru Khan says that she wants for young girls to look at her and think they can achieve their dreams, too! Even though women comprise almost half of the 200 million strong population of the country, it’s almost sad that men’s cricket is possibly the only sport to get national recognition. Moreover, for a developing country, it is quite difficult for women to get support and encouragement to participate in sports. But they’re doing a pretty good job at it.
The girls might still be in training and be in their initial stages, but they’re definitely, definitely not stopping anytime soon. We’ll be keeping these girls on our watchlist for a long time to come.
Watch this space for more updates about these insane women making us so proud. Just so proud. ♥
