11 Of The Most Creative Ways Pakistani Drama Characters Did Halal On-Screen Kissing

By Iman Zia | 3 Jul, 2018

The most widely held assumption held about ‘sexual tension’ was that it’s purely a physical phenomenon between two people. It’s easily solved in our Hollywood counterparts on-screen, mostly through a series of routine stages (involving a tremendous amount of kissing). Bollywood’s primal tenets on depicting sexual tension are similar enough, albeit far more exaggerated and grotesque more often than not because up until recently, there was a sturdy no-kissing rule in place. So to make up for the simple kiss, the industry had to gnaw its way around to match that level of intensity on-screen. We still, unfortunately, have the no-kissing rule implemented that’s just one in a seemingly endless doctrine on what isn’t allowed to be shown. We’ve tried to get a way around it, and while it worked a few times, it also felt like a car pileup on the motorway most times too. Here are just a few examples of dramas attempting to redefine all we thought we knew about on-screen kissing…

The most basic substitute, the hand holding as shown in Humsafar between Khirad and Ashar

Unarguably the most utilized form in place of kissing has to be hand holding. You can’t really go wrong, and while it’s almost the norm now for Pakistani telly, the loveliest one has to be when Ashar tightly held Khirad’s when they fell in love.

Kashaf and Zaroon’s wedding night in ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’

So instead of the usual kiss, there was a lot of awkward eye staring (more so from Zaroon’s side – he looked at Kashaf like he was ready to pounce); Kashaf just kept smirking.

Arsal removing Jia’s lipstick in ‘Suno Chanda’

If you think about it, the underlying tension that erupted between Arsal and Jia was almost tangible to touch. The palpability of their interactions literally made me feel like I was the one intruding on their love fest! I spent every waking second just screaming at my telly…”JUST KISS ALREADY!”

Salima ruffling Rashid’s hair in ‘Sammi’

Salima and Rashid had such an adoring little marriage, and while their intimate moments were largely kept at bay, this lovely scene where Salima couldn’t stop ruffling Rashid’s hair while he slept was your dosage of halal kissing in the drama.

When Ashar unties Khirad’s hair in ‘Humsafar’

Well, since kissing was off limits and unchartered territory, what better way to depict closeness than when Ashar couldn’t stop gushing over Khirad and then went on to untying her hair in quite the seductive manner.

The ‘chewing gum’ incident on ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’

Honestly the most cringe-worthy moment on ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai,’ this moment really was a big NO. I’m all for these couple moments, and I truly treasure the show, but this was just an absolute mess to watch. While Kashaf couldn’t stop shying away, I felt like throwing up; halal kissing gone wrong…oh, so wrong.

The healing scene in ‘Yakeen Ka Safar’

It was in this very moment that Zubia just fell head over heels in love with Asfandyar. And the way she looked at him as he bandaged up her injury will forever remain one of the most intense HALAL form of kissing (because you know she wanted to).

All that staring in ‘Suno Chanda’

Arsal was an ardent creature, and when he realized he loved Jia, his ardent nature only became all the more profound. Note: all the moments he kept holding his gaze with Jia was SO potent it was just killing me inside.

I mean come on, they’re LITERALLY doing everything but kissing…

Haider and Mishal’s reunion in ‘Besharam’

When Haider and Mishal both realize their mistakes and reconcile, the drama ends with the ride back home as the scene pans out above them; yet what was honestly the best was when Mishal held Haider’s shoulders before she got onto the bike as a message – she was his, and he was hers. They couldn’t kiss obviously, so this form of physical intimacy was enough (well it wasn’t enough because as a shipper obviously, you want your faves to kiss but never mind).

The confession between Zubia and Asfy in ‘Yakeen Ka Safar’

After Zubia and Asfandyar pretty much confess their undying love for one another, instead of the usual kiss we would have seen in a Hollywood equivalent, what we were given was a lot of hand-holding. Sigh. We didn’t even get a hug.

The ‘almost kiss’ in ‘Suno Chanda’

Ashar tells Jia repeatedly that he can’t let her go, and as he repeats himself he physically holds her SO close you just KNOW that if there wasn’t some dumbfounded rule on kissing, then they’d probably be making out by now (sorry not sorry).
