This 14th August is special for a lot of people since it coincides with the coming of Naya Pakistan. Everyone has a list of things and wishes they want to see fulfilled in this new version of our country. Pakistani celebrities are also eagerly waiting to see what changes come about.
Among those celebrating azaadi is Mahira Khan who has a wish that strikes a chord with us all, and she also has a tragic story to go with it.
In a recent Instagram post, she uploaded an adorable drawing by her son, Azlan, of how he sees the future of Pakistan. Mountains, highrises and an aire of general happiness. Mahira says in her post that while she was very excited to share this drawing with the world, she also finds herself extremely sad over news that she heard about someone she knows.
‘As I write this now I have tears trickling down my face because someone I know, her 11 year old was shot in a mugging on the streets of Karachi last night.’
While there may have been a dip in the number of news stories that talk about street crime, the reality is that it’s still prevalent, and this story is a horrifying reminder of that.
Mahira ends her post with the wish that all children are safe in Pakistan in the future.
Our children are our future. As a country, we need to give them a safe, pleasant and nurturing environment to grow, grow up to become whatever it is they want to be.

Having our country secure and safe for all is an important element in making a ‘Naya Pakistan’. Here’s hoping the new government is able to tackle the issue and improve the current situation in the country.
