The HUM Awards took place last night and while I loved most of the show, there were some moments that left me hakka bakka. And here they are, in no particular order of being bizarre
Yasir Hussain made some super inappropriate jokes and then the whole internet had a meltdown
So Yasir Hussain, while introducing Ahsan Khan, said something along the lines of ‘inhon ne itna uccha portray kiya hai child molester ko ke mera dil kerta hai mein bhi child ban jaoun’
He was, understandably, met with a lot of dirty, stinky looks and a lot of people just getting awkward by what he said. While Yasir has apologized for his remarks and has also said that he is highly highly against child abuse and that it was all in bad taste he needs to realize that being on a platform as big as the HUM Awards and as a public figure, everyone should think ten times before saying anything THAT offensive.
Ahsan Khan was forced to say his… uhmmm… inappropriate dialogues even after he refused to do it
Udaari won Best Everything, basically. And for good reason. However, when accepting the award for Best Negative Character, Ahsan Khan was urged by the crowd to don Paa Imtiaz’s character one more time and to deliver a few lines. Ahsan refused at first, given the sensitivity of the character and story, and how there is usually always public backlash at instances like these, but eventually gave in to the crowd’s pressure.
And then Mr. Inappropriate-Awards-Show-Man Ahmed Ali Butt added fuel to fire with his weird AF follow up to Ahsan
While the matter could have been ended right there, Ahmed Ali Butt started walking with Ahsan Khan saying ‘mein tau toffiyaan kha bhi loun ga’ >>>> cringe
Noman Ejaz came up on stage and started a… khutba over women’s clothing
An Awards show, in any fraternity, should be one without bias and without judgement. However, Noman Ejaz decide to single-handedly change that. He came up on stage and started a long speech about how, while being ‘Muslim’, everyone was with their bare ankles, and how everyone should ‘straighten up’ because Ramazan is approaching….*crickets*
Iffat Umer seemed to have forgotten how far to hold the microphone from her face
Easily the loudest person from the whole evening, not only did she scream everything she was saying, she also held the mic a millimeter away from her mouth, making the whole experience all the more pleasant.
Noman Ejaz and his desire to police women struck again
You’d think Noman Ejaz would be done with his Papa Please Preach approach to the night, but no. In a completely unrelated context, Ejaz decided to take the mic and say the following:
Aurat aur ghori ager ek awaaz per na aayein, tau samjho masla aurat mein nahi, mard ki mardaangi mein hai. Mein yahaan maujood har aadmi se yeh baat kehna chahta houn ke ye baat deyhaan sey sunein, aur humesha yaad rakhein, ke ager aap ki aurat ya aap ki ghori ek hi awaaz per nahi aatein, tau woh ghalti aap ki hai. Aap ka roeb kam hai, ya aap mein itni taaqat hi nahi…
Needless to say, this comment was met with a lot of disapproval from the crowd and nobody endorsed what he said. Whether he meant it as a joke or not, wtf?
Bazahir educated people elbowing others to get pictures with the celebrities
Whether that was editors of respected publications or members of the public, there was a lot of elbowing taking place both on and off the red carpet. Two words: Not Pleasant.
There was “applause” for Ahsan Khan because a couple Indians had “endorsed” his performance
Ahsan Khan’s performance in Udaari was hands-down one of the best performances of Pakistani television. And for Ahmed Ali Butt to ask the audience for a round of applause for Ahsan Khan just because a director and a singer from India ‘endorsed’ his performance in Udaari…yep that happened…I was just as confused as you.
And here are some not-so-WTF moments from the HUM Awards
These moments are some of what made the night as special as it was:
Osman Khalid Butt told off the security not to push fans away and do their job of keeping everyone organized
What happened was, a bunch of people somehow got onto the red carpet when Obi was on and started taking pictures with him. When the security started pushing people away, Osman asked him not to, because it was a lapse on their side, and he wasn’t going to refuse those who love him. Yes, Obi, I love you, too. ♥
Ahsan Khan used his platform to, yet again, highlight the need for sex education in schools
When Ahsan Khan came on stage to present Areesha the Best Child Actor award for her performance in Udaari, he also spoke about how every school should incorporate sex-ed into their curriculum and if we don’t talk about it, we sure as hell can’t stop it. Because if we’re so afraid to speak about something, how do you stand up against it.
Hamza Ali Abbasi dedicated his award to Kashmiris, those fighting intolerance, and corruption
Hamza wanted to draw attention to the people suffering in Kashmir, as well as those fighting intolerance, in any which way in our own country, and of course, those who are in constant battle against corruption.
Farida Khanum was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award… and then she sang. Live.
Every desi music lover craves for the moment they can hear Farida Khanum live on stage. And well, I must say, I’ve lived. ♥
We were at the Hum Awards and we’ve got lots of scoop for you, so stay tuned for more of all that went down at this year’s Hum Awards.
