Wells recently posted a video covering ghazal virtuoso Mehdi Hasan’s Gulon Mein Rang Bhare

Written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, with music by the great Mehdi Hasan, this ghazal is a work of beauty.

The video has since been received very well by local and international audiences, with many appreciating her melodious voice. Perhaps the most surprising element about Tanya’s covers are her ability to adopt a local accent and pronunciation, a task usually difficult for foreigners/non-Urdu speakers.

It is worth appreciating that Tanya Wells followed the Raag and sang in perfect Ang.

Wells lived in India for over three years, attending school in the foothills of the Himalayas. She later returned to study Indian classical music (including light classical, thumri, bhajan and ghazal)

When asked which Pakistani female musician inspired her the most, she stated Abida Parveen as one, recounting being in awe of her after watching a video of her performance singing Baba Bulleh Shah’s poetry.

Tanya has also previously covered Shahanshah-e-Ghazal Mehdi Hassan’s ‘Rafta Rafta Woh Meri Hasti’ and ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Man Kunto Maula’, all faring well on social media.

She released her own track “Na Jaane Saiyan”, exploring thumri for the first time.

Wells believes Sufi music trumps all other forms of music. “To develop a culture that sings praises of God and divine beauty is incomparable to any other. It is pure bliss”, she says.

And we couldn’t agree more.
