Fahad Mustafa Comparing Mehwish Hayat’s Web Series With Porn Has Started An Online War

By Arslan Athar | 28 Jan, 2019

Mehwish Hayat recently starred in a web series called ‘Enaaya’, which is basically about an aspiring singer who finds her big break in college amidst some ‘band drama’ and a budding love story.

The whole series was recently released online and it hasn’t left anyone impressed. Many said that the storyline was basic and predictable.

Fahad Mustafa also found fault with the show, but for other reasons.

According to the actor, the show is ‘trying to be cool’ by talking about sex so much. He even went as far as saying that ‘they should just call it porn’.

There have been a lot of people who agree with him.

There were calls made for a full ban.

Clearly, there has been an issue with the language in the web series.

There’s video proof to go with the claim!

This tweet did get a lot of people to start thinking about web series and online content, critically.

This person put the blame on us.

But there were MANY people who called out Fahad.

Pehlay tum khud sudhar jao’

So many taanay!

People were going easy on him.

His own movies were brought up as a reference.

People couldn’t help but see the irony in this situation.

He was even called a hypocrite.

As his tweet began to gain more traction, Fahad Mustafa tried to ‘cover up’ and blame it on foreign content.

People’s responses under this tweet have been mixed- some went with it and blamed Indian content, while some still bashed ‘Enaya’. The timing of Fahad Mustafa’s tweet just seems too coincidental; ‘Enaya’ had just released a few days earlier.

Lastly, Wajahat Rauf put out a clarification about his web series and the claims of bad language.

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has spoken out against overt content and gotten backlash, a prime example is Hamza Ali Abbasi. There is a fair bit of hypocrisy involved with making large, sweeping statements about the content of films- the Pakistani entertainment industry is still small, so everyone has to do everything. Rather than pulling each other down for projects, they’re not part of, just support each other.

Clearly, Pakistani TV and Web content is received very differently by different people. Some deem something as offensive while others find no fault with it. The question is, whose sensibilities does a filmmaker go with? And also, what level of expression is too much? This is a HUGE debate that no one in the Pakistani entertainment is willing to take up.
