Here's How Dramatically Women's Eyebrow Style Has Changed Over The Years

By Iman Zia | 7 May, 2017

Eyebrows these days literally define your look. Too thin, and you’reconsidered a fashion disaster who’s not with anything remotely fashionable and should leave this duniya ASAP. Too thick and unplucked, say goodbye to sitting with the cool girls. How these little hairy caterpillars on our face became such trendsetters are beyond me. While strong, thick fierce eyebrows are all the rage these days, that wasn’t always the case.
Here’s a look back into history to see how eyebrow fashion for women has evolved over the years.

Way before fashion and trends became a thing, women were trying to stand out in any part of the world that they could.

Around 332 BC in Ancient Egypt, women worked the arched look. They used kohl to underline the bottom parts of their brows to bring out a sharper look.

A couple hundred years after that, in about 146 BC, ancient Greek women were obsessed with uni-brows.

They’d darken their brows with soot and this was the symbol of prosperity, beauty and intelligence. Women would also paint in between both brows to recreate a uni-brow.

Their unibrows were a sign of purity and chastity. Women who weren’t endowed with thick eyebrows would fill them up with black powder to achieve the monobrow look, and when powder failed, they would often resort to goat’s hair and tree resin to stick on false brows.

1920’s

Film was introduced during this era and so it was natural that Hollywood stars were emulated in fashion and style. Women had plucked, penciled and thin eyebrows and actresses like Clara Bow served as inspiration to this trend.

Petroleum jelly was very popular during this time, where it was applied to add shine to the skin below the brows.

Thin eyebrows remained popular, with slight soft arches towards the 1930’s.

1940’s

It was during the 40’s eyebrows became a little more natural and thicker. They were still heavily arched, but a portion was relatively fuller as the arch caved upwards.

The 50’s were about flaunting the hair. Brows, alike. Thicker, although strictly shaped, brows were in fashion.

Bolder, heavier eyebrows were the trend of this era. Dark brows were penciled in too, reminiscent of Ancient Egyptian days.

Arched eyebrows were en vogue during the 1970’s. Sharp arches and angles were all the rage, like this image of Aasia Begum in one of her movies.

2000’s

Thin eyebrows that mirrored those in the 1920’s were back with a bang. Pop culture set this trend ablaze and girls across the world were thinning their eyebrows.

Eyebrow waxing gained prominence during the early 2000’s too.

Now

Thin eyebrows quickly fizzled out and bushy eyebrows are back in, now. The current trend, called the power brow, was brought to the spotlight by prominent bushy brow ambassadors like Cara Delevigne and Sadaf Kanwal.
