Coke Studio's Tribute To Noor Jehan Is The Most Beautiful Thing You'll Hear Today

By Sarah Babar | 27 Aug, 2017

Coke Studio has had its ups and downs, this season. People have loved it and people haven’t been pleased. There have been debuts, duets, and tributes. And while we’re still not over Ranjish Hi Sahiand we haven’t stopped shaking our legs to Tinak DhinAnd oooobviously, there’s been Momina. But something magical happened on the Coke Studio stage, last night.

The magic that is Faiz sahab took over the Coke Studio stage once again, and it was Humaira Channa who was the torch-bearer, this time

Singing Mujhse Pehli Si Muhabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang is the most befitting tribute one can pay to Malika-e-Tarranum Noor Jehan. When Faiz sahab first heard Noor Jehan sing the ghazal, he immediately gave it to her as a present. It’s like a jeweler giving you the Koh-i-noor, and telling the world that it’s yours. Faiz is said to have said ‘this is not my song, it belongs to Noor Jehan, now’. She was also credited as being the co-author for the poem after she composed the legendary tune for it, single-handedly.

“Mein ye samjha tha ke tu hai tau darkshaan hai jahaan”

Who would have thought that one of the industry’s greatest singers would collaborate with a relatively newer singing sensation and create what they did? Humaira Channa has been around for so long and we always feel like she has never been appreciated enough. And last night was an ode to her talent, as well. The emotion of longing, of disappointment, of bittersweet love that prevails in this poem, shone through Humaira’s voice, beautifully.

While Humaira Channa and her vocals made everyone swoon, Nabeel Shaukat Ali was no different

The Bewajah sensation who won an India-Pakistan singing competition in 2012, has been making people fall in love with his voice. The depth, the emotion and the thehrao in his voice all take you to another world, while listening to it.

And we’re not the only ones who feel this way about the tribute

Here is the whole song for your listening pleasure

While one can never ever replicate the original Noor Jehan, there will always be tributes, and they will always be beautiful. What did you think of this tribute to Noor Jehan and Faiz?
