There are 50 million Pakistanis that are suffering from various mental health issues. Let that sink in. According to a 2014 WHO report, there are only 400 trained psychiatrists in Pakistan for a population of almost 190 million and that’s well, immensely unfortunate. The taboos surrounding mental health and mental illnesses are general are so deep rooted that it will take some time to uproot them. Meanwhile, what we can do is try and better understand the rampant mental illnesses and the basic terminologies behind them, to enable ourselves to empathize with those who are suffering from them.
Half the game is understanding the illness while the rest of it is helping them get out of it. Let’s take the first step, at least:
1. Depression
2. Anxiety
3. High-Functioning Depression
4. Psychiatrist
5. Psychosomatic disorder
6. Cognitive/Behavioral therapies
7. Bipolar disorder
8. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
9. Panic Attacks/Panic Disorders
10. Schizophrenia
11. Phobias
12. ADHD
13. Paranoia
14. Remission vs. Relapse
15. Stigma
