If you’re not stick-thin like Nargis Fakhri or your abs aren’t as hard as Mehwish billi Hayat then you sure as hell know how hard life and zamanay ke taanay have been on you and your muffin top.

Here are all the annoying things they’ll say to you if you’re not a skinny girl in Pakistan:

1. ‘Shaadi kaise hogi’ comments

Marriage is not our ultimate destination in life. Please take your sympathies for all the overweight girls you think will never get married and shove them somewhere no one can see them. If your son is incapable of looking beyond the physicality of his future partner, he is too shallow and immature to have a partner at all. Period.

2. Thin friends who call themselves fat

If you don’t look overweight, odds are, you’re not. You may be a little out of shape or unhappy with how you’re looking currently, but you are definitely not ‘fat’. Calling yourself fat in front of girls who actually have weight issues makes you insensitive, ignorant and mean. God, stop feeding off the struggles of your friends.

3. Lack of support for your lean eating

‘Why do you always order healthy food? Do you REALLY have to skip the cheese? You’re so boring to go out with! Why can’t you miss the gym to go get dessert with me?’

Well, friend, I don’t think anyone enjoys giving up pizza and chocolate cake. The least you could do is try to pretend you care just a tiny bit if we are making an effort to work on ourselves. Oh and if you want to go ahead and butcher us for the one hour we take out during the day to exercise, we don’t think you have our best interest at heart. Off you go.

4. Snarky jokes from family

As if the judgment from strangers and friends wasn’t enough, sometimes family, too, leave no stone un-turned when it comes to making us feel bad about being overweight. No, we will not need to adorn a tent on Eid, just a kurta from Khaadi will be enough. And yes, we are very well aware that our arms are flabby and our thighs are much bigger than yours. Thanks for the concern though, and the lovely haathi jokes.

5. Judgement on choice of clothes

Whether it’s wanting to join the lehnga bandwagon and showing a little bit of stomach on your best friend’s mehndi, or something as simple as heading to the gym without a dupatta, fat girls are automatically deemed vulgar by 90% of the population because of the extra flab on us. God forbid rishta aunties and sleazy uncles set their eyes on something less than perfectly toned arms and abs in the making.

6. Having to live in constant fear of that Nutella naan going straight to your hips

For girls trying to get into shape, the constant struggle of choosing between happiness that comes from eating food that we love and happiness that comes from looking good in the mirror is not pleasant, to say the least.

7. Weight = Identity, apparently

No one cares if Aunty Shehla’s daughter went to Harvard on 100% scholarship, currently runs an NGO for underprivileged children, is co-founder of the next big start-up in Pakistan and is actually still a pretty humble human being despite her achievements. Maybe she’s working her ass off to get in shape. Maybe she’s perfectly happy with how she looks. Maybe, she’s beyond looks and just wants to focus on her actions instead. Either way, if she’s overweight, that will be the only highlight of any discussion based on her. Ever.

8. Alllllll the restaurants

This is the worst. Food is the only entertainment us Pakistanis have. Have mercy and at least someone invest in menus catering to people who want fun, healthy food that doesn’t taste like grass.

9. Finding western clothes in Pakistani stores

It only makes sense to import/produce western clothes that fit girls up to UK size 10. Because no one in Pakistan is fat. The few unfortunate fatties only wear XL shalwar kameez stitched by their darzis.  Overweight people don’t have the right to wear jeans and t-shirts, obviously. All their bulges will show #Astaghfirullah.

10. All eyes on what you’re eating

‘Wow..she eats so much’ or ‘Wow…she barely eats, phir bhee itni moti hai?’

People are never going to let us hear the end of what they think about how many kilos of sugar we consume in a day or how many meals we substitute for salads. We are either under scrutiny for being too fat to be eating in public or too healthy to be fat. Frankly, dealing with your judgments is a struggle so STFU?

11. Backhanded compliments

Aww really? You think I have a pretty face for a big girl? Oh and I look thinner in black? Awfully kind of you.

12. Unwanted suggestions and health tips

Downing apple cider vinegar every morning followed by cardio for 3 hours straight and reading the ‘4 easy ways to lose weight’ article you forwarded will not miraculously turn us turn into Kate Moss overnight. Kindly refrain from making your dumb AF suggestions. Nobody asked for your help.

13. Feeling constantly under confident and insecure in public because of all the society ke taanay

Thanks to everything people say and imply in reference to our weight, a lot of us actually suffer from lack of confidence and faith in ourselves, even if we try to look beyond it. If only society would stop with the negative vibes, maybe we would be able to work on getting over it and focus on being body positive and healthy. We are more than the number on the scale.

Be fat and proud, ladies.
