In something we were, unfortunately, expecting and anticipating, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal starrer ‘Raazi’ has been banned in Pakistan. The Dharma Production is all set to release in India on May 11, however, the censor board has banned the film because of its allegedly negative portrayal of Pakistan.
…We aren’t even surprised anymore tbh, like honestly what’s with our censor board
‘Raazi’ is an adaptation of novel ‘Calling Sehmat,’ and revolves around an Indian spy, played by Alia who marries a Pakistani military officer during the Indo-Pak war in 1971
Alia is an undercover Kashmiri agent who has been sent to spy on the Pakistani family she marries into before the war breaks out.
A senior distribution company member of the board told news publication ‘The Express Tribune’ that “it is disappointing to see that films on controversial subjects are being produced in India time and time again”
He stated that “all our distributors are well aware about Alia’s role in ‘Raazi,’ and so no one is willing to purchase the film.” He stated how touchy the subject of historical conflicts between India and Pakistan is, and clearly implied that all distributors had already come to a collective consensus that the film will not be shown.
Actor Vicky, in disucssion with ‘The Hindu’ expressed how ‘Raazi’ is far deeper than just an Indo-Pak war film
He told the Indian news publication that he was playing a Pakistani, and that it “should be shown in a certain light. I think the story does the work. People will realize it’s not an Inida – Pakistan war film;” it’s much more than that.
