Darpok folks unite

Being the darpok actually takes a lot of courage in Pakistan households because of the endless bullying you probably go through. But hey, someone’s gotta be the scaredy cat and if you’re reading this, chances are that it’s you.

1. You’re never ever interested whenever someone suggests watching a scary movie

And it wasn’t because you were scared or anything… just because you heard bad reviews.

2. You always asked to sleep in the middle during sleepovers

You asked your cousins or friends to let you sleep in the middle because then the monsters couldn’t get you.

3. You ask for company when going to the bathroom, especially if it’s in the dark

You know after you’ve all watched a scary movie and are chilling in the television lounge but then nature calls and the prospect of going to the bathroom alone just seems too daunting…

4. You enthusiastically participate in scary storytelling but you know you’re only setting yourself up for a whole night of nightmares

You and all your friends sit in a circle telling scary stories of your chotay mamu or bari phuppo being possessed and it’s all fun and games till later in the night when you have to go to sleep alone and all the stories are coming to mind.

5. Your friends and family love to scare you just for fun

You’re the one who says no to watching a scary movie or to summoning a demon and therefore are known as the party pooper.

6. You can recite all the protective kalmas and duas by heart

If all else fails, you know the ayat-ul-kursi by heart and constantly read it under your breath.

7. Your parents frequently find you asleep in their room in the morning because you got scared in your own room alone

They know that sometime during the night, you probably got scared and took along your pillow to sleep in the comfort of your parents room. Cause jinns don’t wanna mess with desi moms.

8. Turning off the lights at night is one of the most stressful moments of your life

When you’re turning off the lights in the lounge and kitchen and have to run to your room right after so a demon won’t catch you… you never run faster than at that moment.

9. So you try and sleep with at least SOME kind of light on

10. You sleep wrapped up in a blanket or a chaadar because without one you feel “unsafe”

But then you’re constantly too hot under your blanket because you refuse to sleep with it off.

Remember that scene in Paranormal Activity where the girl is dragged off the bed by the demon? Well that wouldn’t have happened if both her feet were under the blanket.

11. Your nightmares give you nightmares for months afterward

You may try everything to save yourself but then when you do get a “nightmare”, you are shitting bricks the next few months because you are scared of having another nightmare.

12. You dream up scenarios about jinns and ghosts even when there’s nothing to be scared of

For example, you hate looking after your nieces and nephews especially when they’re randomly pointing at space saying something is there.

13. Your friends and family tell  stories about how you got scared over and over again and laugh about you being darpok

“Remember the time you got so scared that you started crying and it turned out it was only your cat’s shadow?”, yep. Please tell these stories to everyone.
