Here's Everything You Need To Know About Actor In Law

Actor In Law, Nabeel Qureshi’s latest project, has been released and is making waves in Pakistani theaters. If you haven’t seen it yet but are planning to, here’s what you need to know as an audience:

The Brown Parent Effect:

Actor In Law centers around Shan Mirza, played by Fahad Mustafa, who aspires to become an actor. His father, played by Om Puri, like every proper brown parent, disapproves of the idea, and wants him to become a lawyer. Just like him. Because he is so successful. And competent.

If you let your child follow his/her dreams (without proclaiming them na farmaan), are you really even a brown parent?

Synchronized Dancing:

Eau de Bollywood, anyone?

You know how you randomly start busting wicked moves in a public place and everyone in the vicinity is on the same page as you? No? Me neither. Seemingly-spontaneous synchronized dancing is best left to our neighbors.

After gaining fame as a theatrical, energetic lawyer, Shan Mirza’s world is turned upside down when he is faced with a case that shakes up our society and puts his career in jeopardy (not because the proletariat realized that they have nothing to lose but their chains and organized themselves for an anti-bourgeois revolution).
The world turns its back on him. Journalists crowd his home, the TV channels mock him, the masses call out for justice. Playing the role of a proper brown parent, Shan’s successful, competent lawyer father throws him out of the house. Shan takes that as his cue to take a long, sad walk in the rain.

Rain + Karachi = The Abyss (staring back)

The thing is, in Karachi, rain does not last long enough for you to take a pre-occupied walk leading up to eventually unleashing a melodramatic monologue (inspired by inner conflict over being an actor/lawyer) on a well-meaning passerby.

Mehwish Hayat:

Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. (Everybody in Slytherin put your mfkn hands up).

Shan finds his light in a fierce AF, Parsi girl (kudos to Nabeel Qureshi, the director, for minority representation). Sadly, Mehwish’s character is largely an underdeveloped character throughout Actor in Law, but drives the laughs home.

Karachi is featured. Heavily.

Speaking of home, Actor In Law is set in Karachi. Wuhu. K-town. City of lights. #FixIt

The city seems (relatively) cleaner. No mobile phones are snatched. Mehwish Hayat strolls about in Western/liberal apparel, just like we all do in Karachi, and men don’t gawk. Just like in Karachi.

The film is also a social satire to some extent, in that touches upon Pakistan’s contemporary society (and the escapades of our public figures)

Making dollars ft. Ayyan:

Ahhh, social satire on point. You know how dat go.

Most noteworthy: Bright karain issay!

Cameo: This gem of a meme thanks to Ayesha Sana’s aversion to the dark.

And the angle that takes the cake? Young people’s passion for expressing outrage by posting things over the Internet:

Kind of like this article, but not really.
