Little Things You Do That Will Drive Your Parents Crazy

By Sadia Khan | 7 Feb, 2016

Who doesn’t love their parents? They are always there to support you and love you unconditionally. You try to make them feel proud of you every now and then. At the same time, you do A LOT of things (which you can’t help) that make them get mad at you.

1. Talking back to them.

There is no one to guide you on this. What’s the proper way to behave when your parents are blaming you for something you had to intention of doing? I mean who wants to fail a subject at school? No one! that’s the point. Dearest parents, we don’t know what you mean by “give me an answer” when you follow it up with a “keep your mouth shut”.

2. Not putting the glass back in the shelf or leaving your shoes out in public.

We tend to get thirsty and we drink water – a natural process. right? With so many things going on in your brain, it’s only natural for you to forget to put the glass back on the shelf. Unfortunately, your ammi doesn’t think this way. Everything needs to be in its place. That’s also why leaving your shows in the living room will get you into some hot water.

3. Shutting the door with a BANG!

How many times do your parents tell you to politely shut the door, whether it be the main door of the house or your room or even the car? Sometimes you don’t realize your own strength and the door shuts in a way that just annoys the shit out of your parents.

4. Spending more time in your bedroom

It’s perfectly normal to have some alone time in your room. You can watch a movie (Netflix anyone?), read a nice book or just let some thoughts cross your mind for a while. Unfortunately, our parents don’t fully get this. If you don’t want to sit with them, they think there’s something wrong. But here’s where it gets a bit confusing. When they get ticked off at you, they always tell you “Jao apney kamaray mein, meri nazar say door.”

5. Mid-night cooking

Sometimes, a normal person might skip the dinner and start to have hunger pangs late at night. What if you’re up late at night studying? What if you live in Islamabad and there’s no place to get food from late at night?

6. Dressing

When you go out with your parents to buy an outfit, they won’t stop asking you about it until you wear said outfit. But when you go shopping without them, they stare you down and make you subconscious about what you’re wearing. All of sudden you’ve become a little “behaya”, “loofer”, or “gadha.”

7. “Fazool kharchi”

Remember the last time you went to a fancy restaurant with your friends and you cared to “share” the rates with your parents? Not a great idea. Next thing you know, you’re listening to an endless lecture on spending money. “Paisay darakth par ugtein hein na?” This will be repeated several times.

8. Messy/untidy room

Why is the state of your bedroom so important to your parents? It’s as if the mehman will come and sit in your room rather than the drawing room. If you left your notebook on your bed, it’s so that you know where you left off. The clothes are on the ground because you were either in a hurry or it’s easier for you to remember which ones need washing.

9. Decision-making

It doesn’t matter if you’re 6 years old or 25 years old, in your parents’ eyes you lack good decision making skills. You don’t know which educational institute is good for you or if you want to be a doctor or an artist. Only your parents can sort this out for you.

10. Checking your phone

You’re phone vibrated so you took it out to see what the notification was from. You look up and your parents give you THE look. It is 2016 after all and we live in the internet age…
