13 Pakistani Dramas For Everyone Who Hated Mann Mayal

By Momina Mindeel | 9 Sep, 2016

Ever single day, your mothers, household helpers and sometimes even fathers – all huddled together in the TV lounge, their eyes fixated on the TV screen – sit through the sappy TV dramas. However, with an increase in the number of drama serials being aired everyday, the story-line as well as the quality of acting is deteriorating rather rapidly. Mann Mayal being one of those iconic sappy TV dramas, had captured the Pakistani public’s imagination for 31 episodes. Now that it has ended, you definitely need something else to fill your free time with.

So here are some of the most interesting TV shows you should watch now that Mann Mayal has ended:

1. Daam

Directed by Mehreen Jabbar, Daam is a remarkable drama serial that encapsulates the themes of love, jealousy and human emotions perfectly. The natural acting coupled with excellent direction will keep you glued till the very end.

2. Dastaan

Dastaan encapsulates the horrors of partition through an immensely heart-warming love story. Sanam Baloch’s innocence together with Fawad Khan’s ravishing personality is all that the story needs.

 3. Main Abdul Qadir Hun

Fahad Mustafa is an immensely versatile actor and Main Abdul Qadir Hun is a living testimony to it. The drama serial is a heart-warming journey of a boy who seeks to find himself, amidst all the chaos in his life. An absolute delight to watch.

4. Durr-e-Shahwar

Durre-e-Shahwar is another one of the HUM TV classics. It is a story of a mother, played by Samina Peerzada, who,  in an attempt to keep her daughter calm during one of her marriage fiascoes, narrates her own life story. The drama is an epitome of class and excellent acting.

5. Azar Ki Ayegi Barat

Bushra Ansari and her hilariously remarkable Saima Chaudhry makes Azar ki ayegi Barat a perfect amalgamation of humor and wit. The play has 2 equally entertaining sequels as well – Dolly ki ayegi barat and Takay ki ayegi Barat.

6. Shehr-e-Zaat

Shehr-e-Zaat is a story of a soul-stirring spiritual journey that an arts student Falak goes through. She builds a sculptor of her dream man and falls in love with it. Mahira Khan’s brilliant acting makes Shehr-e-Zaat absolutely worthy your time.

7. Sunehre Din

Sunehre Din is a prequel to Alpha Bravo Charlie. However, it is rather unfortunate that not many people of our generation are aware of the existence of this masterpiece as much as they are about Alpha Bravo Charlie. Watching Sunehre Din is synonymous to eating fresh bread with lots of butter; it is guaranteed to make your day and consequently life better.

8. Des Pardes

Zulfiqar Sheikh and his gorgeous wife Tasmina Ahmed Sheikh, who happens to be a MP in Scotland as well, have churned out some of the most amazing PTV classics with Des Pardes (and the next two in our list). Set in the UK, these dramas are laced with Pakistani values and a hint of familiar warmth.

9. Ansoo

10. Castle Aik Umeed

11. Qissa Saat Raton Ka

Written by Ashfaq Ahmed, Qissa sat raton ka is a one-episode tele-play that falls in the horror genre. The main actor gets challenged by his fiance to spend a night at her dada ji ki haveli that has been deserted years ago. The play is famous for the dialogue Mein tou maafi maangne ja raha thathat an aggrieved and restless soul residing inside the house, keeps repeating.  The tele-play is a must watch, if you are even a little into horror yet meaningful stuff.

12. Aangan Tehra

The classic PTV comedy serial – Angan Tehra. The implicit criticism on the electoral system of Pakistan together with the world class acting by some of the most amazing actors of the past, the wit in Aangan Tehra is un-matchable.

13. Ankahi

Shahnaz Sheikh’s naturally goofy charter coupled with Behroz Sabswari’s and Saleem Nasir’s flawless acting make Ankahi an absolute delight to watch.

Happy watching.
